Are people actually daring to book holidays this summer? If so when?

Having cancelled every holiday I booked last year, I have been more than a bit trepidacious about booking anything this year so far. But I soooo want to see the sea.

I am thinking of booking a week in Devon in a caravan in August. That should OK ok, shouldn't it?

We're going to Pembrokeshire and Devon in August. I'm hoping that should be OK by then. DS was supposed to go to France with Scouts in August, but that has been postponed until next year.

I would have thought by the summer British holidays would be fine. Remember last July/august/September, and this year many should be vaccinated by then. I personally won’t book a holiday abroad though

I've got a house booked with a group of friends in France for August, booked since September, but with excellent cancellation/refund terms, and I've not yet booked my travel. We've also booked a campsite in the UK for the same week, so at least we'll see each other somewhere.

I've had lots of flights cancelled over the last 12 months, and although most of them I've opted for a refund, on 1 set, that wasn't an option, and we've used them to book a city break flights for Easter (no accommodation booked). I'm feeling that trip is unlikely (and another city break in May with friends seems unlikely).

One of the saddest parts of the travel problems amongst all this for me is that my kids are missing out on some formative trips. DD (Y11) missed a language trip, geography trip, her DofE expedition, end of year trip etc etc. Yes some fun stuff, but also stuff to support the curriculum, and actually, some rights of passage stuff. She'll never be able to get that back. She starts A Levels in the autumn, and who knows if they'll be able to do any trips in Y12. Y13 will probably be too late for her as she'll be tied up with exams and Uni applications. It's a massive proportion of their childhoods, and part of their maturing process. I'm not blaming anyone, this is the way it's had to be, I just feel sad for them.

We booked April and June in the UK but last year. Every holiday bar one was cancelled last year. I'm not hopeful about April. I'm tempted to book October half term as surely that should go ahead?

We did have a nice break in Haven last year. Nothing was open but still it was nice to get away. Tbh I would stay in my sisters garage so anywhere feels appealing right now.

justoverthehorizon · 18/01/2021 15:10

We have booked devon for august. .(.last year we went to cornwall in august.) I feel confident it will go ahead, but am happy to take the risk that it may not.

I can't tell you how much I am looking forward to it though

LegendDairy · 18/01/2021 15:21

The 2 I had booked last year I just postponed to this year. both are August so I'll judge it a little bit closer to the time. We'll try and squeeze in a camping weekend if restrictions are lifted a little but that we can do last minute.

I’m hoping to go to Pembrokeshire in early August and to London in early September. Nothing booked yet (other than the leave from work).

I wouldn’t book an overseas hol this year. I had terrible trouble getting a flight refund in 2020 - finally got it via a Section 75 claim 5 months after the trip was cancelled. I really CBA with all that emailing and telephoning again.

Hopefully durinell in holland, driving.

Before Xmas I was feeling quite optimistic about booking a summer holiday to go to my mum's home country where my parents have a house - they went there and my brother's family went there last summer, so I figured if they could go there last summer, surely we'd be able to go this year, especially with vaccinations starting.

But what with new strains and the fact that kids could be at school in the term before, I'm not sure how things will be, or for example, if everywhere this year will insist on quarentine, especially from the UK perhaps. So maybe we won't be able to because we'd have to quarantine either end Confused I'm hoping that maybe where we're going could insitute test and isolation until results on entry (they have been quite organised about COVID and are not a big tourist place) because we could manage that. I think I'll just have to wait until nearer the time - as I said, it's not a big tourist place, though it should be really, so it's not like flights get booked up way in advance.

caringcarer · 18/01/2021 23:31

I was hoping for France in July but not sure as DH is ECV and even after he has vaccine most in France won't have had it by then.

ShanghaiDiva · 18/01/2021 23:36

I have booked two weeks in Cornwall in July. No prepayment and can cancel booking with no penalty up to 10 days before.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 18/01/2021 23:54

I've got holidays to the balearics booked for April and Oct BUT they were both booked for last year and postponed. I obviously on't hold my hope out for the April break at all.

We also have Devon booked for May as we go every year and I hope that will be easily doable.

Also tempted to rebook last year's city break to London for the summer holiday but I'm not going to risk that until I definitely start seeing things becoming much more normal as a trip there without being able to go to the shops and museums normally isn't worth it, nor is the train ride down.

GiantKitten · 18/01/2021 23:58

We’ve booked Snowdonia for late April, but it’s a friend’s cottage and if we can’t go we won’t have to pay.

Also a week in Jersey in September - that’s Airbnb and EasyJet, I don’t know what happens with those if things are still iffy but still it’s nice to have something out of the ordinary to look forward to.

I would love to go back to one of the many lovely European places we’ve holidayed in before, but between Covid and Brexit I can’t imagine when that might happen Sad

Belleende · 19/01/2021 16:28

Right, that's it, Devon in August it is then.

It will be so good to have something, anything to look forward to

We have got a trip to France booked for May, which was originally booked in November 2019 and has been postponed twice. Not at all sure we will make it this time either!

Amazingly we did go on our summer holiday to France in July last year. We had booked it in January and by sheer luck it coincided with the lifting of quarantine on 11 July!

I don't dare book for France for this summer though, and will have to see how it goes.

I do live in Cornwall though, so it could be worse!

vinoandbrie · 19/01/2021 17:18

We’ve booked a week in Cornwall in July. I very much hope it comes off!
