what to wear when running, overweight and unfit

MoriaRoseForever · 18/01/2021 10:25

I want to start running. I am very overweight and self conscious.

I did get a good pair of running trainers .

I am trying to work out what to wear re leggings/tights etc .

They look very unflattering !

Wear with a long t shirt ?

And sports bras ? Am large and need something that will not bounce .

Bought one and it doesn't stop bounce . Any recommended ?

Thanks in advance.

For me it’s really important for leggings to be high waist. My tummy is fat and if leggings are a bit small they peel down over my tummy and I have to stop. I’ve found decathlon sizing to be a little on the small size but I really like their running tops. Fleece lined with a thumb hole to keep sleeves down.
Also, not what you asked, but my best bit of running kit is a beenie wooly hat with Bluetooth headphones in it. It was about £15 and I love it - it gives me couch to 5k encouragement, interspersed with music, all inside a warm hat!

I like men's t shirts ... .

PolloDePrimavera · 18/01/2021 17:57

Decathlon are really good as pp said, and you can get delivery to Asda. I also like H&M, plus Amazon has a brand called aurique and my pair from them are as good as my sweaty Betty pair. Look for a deep waistband so they don't fall down. Or even waistband with a tie thing, can't think what they're called!?!

Definitely shock absorber bra.

Navy or black Adidas leggings with stripes down the side are quite flattering. And a long t shirt .....

Supporting leggings too

These have a great reputation for whatever size they have a great range

Haha this is one of the main factors in me getting up at 5:30 and heading straight out Grin
I wear some brilliant leggings by a brand called Velocity (bought in TK Maxx) that have deep side pockets you can tuck your phone into and a little key pocket.
Then I just wear a loose tshirt (I have a couple of Nike ones) and my running trainers bought from a shop that analysed my gait.
I’ve been going pretty consistently every other day since august and I’ve definitely managed to shed a bit of weight and properly changed my shape. I don’t weigh myself so I don’t know how much weight I’ve lost but I’ve dropped a dress size from a 16 to a loose 14, haven’t really changed my diet although I am a more mindful of what I shove in my gob. I still eat chocolate every day though, I’ll never be a health fanatic in that respect.
Best of luck, getting started is the hardest bit!

I am chubby and like to wear high waisted leggings with a tighter longline vest (primark and H&M do good ones) and a baggy top over that. Your bum and fupa are covered and I don’t have to worry about a baggy top flapping around my thighs. The C25K was brilliant for me, I’m now running at least 5k three or four times a week, something I would never have thought possible!
The best sports bra for my massive norks is the non wired Shock Absorber D+ sports bra from Bravissimo. It is the only one I’ve found that genuinely beats the bounce. It does give you a monoboob, but I’m happy with that as long as they’re not bouncing about! I also treated myself to some Sturdy by Design leggings when I really got going and I love them! Good luck with it all!

I have those exact ones Smile. The pattern is gorgeous and makes me feel happy when I wear them, they're also full length which is a lot better in this weather than 7/8 where you have an exposed and freezing ankle.

Hope you like them.

pickingdaisies · 19/01/2021 13:50

Definitely shock absorber, but the band size comes up small. Bravissimo are great for advice. Once you've got your size sussed, in future you can find old season bargains, because they are not cheap.
Check out NHS c25k for advice and the app or podcast. It really works.

pickingdaisies · 19/01/2021 13:51

Ooh, lovely leggings!!!

JohnMcCainsDeathStare · 19/01/2021 14:11

I have heard good things about George at ASDA with respect to sports wear but I'm not sure what their maximum size is.

I would focus on a decent bra - don't be averse to wearing two if necessary. Also leggings/shorts you can wear under looser shorts - more important to prevent chafing. I'm not plus size but did become Captain Thigh Chafe when I put on weight in lockdown.

I wear shorts over leggings - they often have key/card pockets which are useful if you don't want to be encumbered.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 19/01/2021 14:22

Id also second wearing two bras. Ive seen loads of people do this.

Id say get some leggings with a drawstring around the waist. I find they just fall down if not. Are you prone to chaffing? If not any old tshirt will do. If yes, there are a load of running tops out there. Sports Direct often has good deals. You dont need to spend a lot of money.

I liked that they were a pattern but still dark coloured . And yes, made sure they were full length !!

The shorts on top sounds good. Warm when not yet running lots, and also covers tummy and bottom .

Don't think my arms chafe, but will find out !

I have a hoodie that I can wear over a t short when its cold.

Two bras, can give that a go although it feels quite bulky .

OP posts:
Letsallscreamatthesistene · 19/01/2021 15:36

In my experience bulky but secure is far better than bouncy and free to roam!

JohnMcCainsDeathStare · 19/01/2021 15:54

Don't forget the squat test - wear your most contrasting underwear under leggings and squat in the mirror - if you are flexible enough stick your head between your legs to check out your butt. Leggings should remain opaque throughout.

Also shorts help to keep the crotch in place but decent running tights should not move when running.

Bloodhoundgang · 19/01/2021 16:10

Syrokan on Amazon do a great sports bra. They are adjustable on the straps with velcro which I find comfortable. They go up to 44E if that is any use? I usually have a 32 band but size up as they are rigid but I love them. They are a little low at the front so i wear a low impact sports bra vest top over if I'm just wearing a vest in the gym. Otherwise i just wear a loose tshirt for running.
And good luck 👍
