What will be defunct by the time your grandkids are born?

Talking about this today with my teens, I'm still mind blown by music streaming and can remember listening to the same albums over and over. Having tv on your phone is also amazing.

What do you think will change by the time your grandchildren are born, surely there will be an solar way to charge phone.

Surely something magic will happen that you don't need to plug in your hairdryer!

Anything else?!

I think people will just have one sort of digital device that does everything but in a portable and non-portable version.

Something has to be done about batteries because they are the weak link in current tech. Possibly we'll have some kind of super-battery that lasts for ages and tops itself up using a mix of solar power, motion power etc. so your charger will be something you get out one a year.

I think cash and cheques will go once everyone born before Y2k has died.

Ihatesandwiches · 17/01/2021 18:47

Land-line phones. Only have one because my parents and elderly relatives call it.

LApprentiSorcier · 17/01/2021 18:49

I think the BBC as we know it will go, and all TV will be subscription or stream on demand.

Cherrypi · 17/01/2021 18:49

Writing?

pursuedbyablackdog · 17/01/2021 18:53

Housework maybe wishful thinking everyone will have a housebot

NeedsImprovement01 · 17/01/2021 18:56

Credit/debit cards. Probably replaced with a fingerprint system or something.

NeedsImprovement01 · 17/01/2021 19:04

Lots of disposable things will be illegal/highly taxed. Reusable nappies will become the norm.

NeedsImprovement01 · 17/01/2021 19:06

Poundland. Due to inflation a pound won't go far.

MillieEpple · 17/01/2021 19:07

Petrol cars will be in their way out

Chlordiazepoxide · 17/01/2021 19:08

Cash defo

Some things surely won't change that much toasters, kettle, microwaves never really changed

I wonder if they'll all be fully smart - controlled only by your Alexa or your watch.

stillusingxmaszoflora · 17/01/2021 19:11

Holidays abroad? I notice a lot of young people already seem to camp/ centre parcs/ U.K. holiday more. I think a week in the sun will go due to climate change and it seeming a bit unadventurous.

It's already 'sometimes a Poundland".
BreakfastOfWaffles · 17/01/2021 19:12

Email. Other channels will have superceded it by then.

I think robot assistants will be the norm.

We already have robot assistants in Alexa, room a, ring doorbell etc. But I think they will be more active, reminding you to do things like take your meds and/or bringing said medication to you. They already have made bots that know where things like your baked beans are kept and can make you (say) beans on toast. They have limitations, but on 50+ years the AI will be hugely advanced.

So I don't think it's beyond the realms of possibility.

stillusingxmaszoflora · 17/01/2021 19:15

Does anyone 'watch telly/ channel hop' anymore? We never do and watch everything through streaming so my kids were amazed at their grandparents that they had to look at a paper (?) to find out what was on and then type in a channel number. It was bizarre to them!

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 17/01/2021 19:19

I wonder, personally, whether all ID, in terms of the fingerprint Touch ID we have on phones now will not just extend to bank cards but literally everything in terms of :

Passports/All Other Local Council and Govt needs/DBS/Drivers Licence

You can hand over the evidence that you are You through a fingerprint.

Not good in terms of privacy and Orwellianism obviously 🤔

Yes, I still watch telly the old fashioned way! I even still have a VCR!

Do you remember Video +

They would publish a code with every program and you had to push the code into your remote and hope for the best.

It almost always cut the recording off before the end Grin

Utini · 17/01/2021 19:24

Driving, and possibly car ownership. I think vehicles will all eventually be autonomous, and there'll be a huge fleet of self driving cars in permanent circulation that you can summon when you want them.

LApprentiSorcier · 17/01/2021 19:26

I never trusted that. I used to set recordings to start 2 minutes before and stop 10 minutes afterwards. I remember programming the video for an entire fortnight when we went on holiday in 1991. It had a 'long play function which doubled the length of the cassette although made the quality somewhat ropey.

Kettles are already defunct - the boiling tap thing.
Disposable stuff will be gone - a bit like smoking it will no longer be acceptable.
When I was writing the meal plan earlier I was thinking what future generations would think - I’m ready if walls could talk

Chalkcheese · 17/01/2021 19:30

Cigarette smoking. Just tobacco in general. But I think cannabis will be legal for medical use minimum but as edibles/tablets and maybe vapour or smoked on its own (not sure which way vaping will go)

Dental implants and false teeth will be gone because they'll have worked out how to regenerate teeth. Probably something to do with calcium and stem cells.

All cars will have gone electric. Hopefully powered by renewables too. Not sure whether driver-less will catch on or not though.

I hope we don't see the back of books in print, but I think they might become an expensive collectors item only. Everyone will read on devices instead. Or just listen. Not sure.

I think there will no longer be ID per se but people will have accepted micro chipping as a necessity.

No cash. And maybe a shift to a global currency system? The early signs are there with Bitcoin.

Some of the biggest issues I'm not sure how well handle, especially to do with the environment, climate change, antibiotic resistance, distribution of people, goods, wealth, ageing populations etc.

I think we will have to have accepted the end of capitalism and economic of growth as a driving force. I'm not sure what will replace it

WomenAreBornNotWorn · 17/01/2021 19:31

Meat hopefully. It costs more to make than it's worth.

stillusingxmaszoflora · 17/01/2021 19:42

@WomenAreBornNotWorn where I live in the S.W meat is already a dirty secret. People whisper about bacon in hushed voices, and meat is always in the reduced section, pork especially.
