Any storage solutions that have been brilliant for you. My house is a tip, EVERYTHING needs some storage.

Not built in, sometime I can buy (in an ideal world online but please do post it anyway, I'm really desperate)

Ikea Kallax, with some shelf inserts to make half shelves, plus some drona boxes for the things you can just stick in a large drawrr (kids toys etc.). Then Ikea Billy bookcases, doors on the bottom. All modular so you can mix and match based on your space and if you get white then you can easily add to them at a later date.

Before you buy storage try and work out what type of organiser you are. If you create storage that doesn’t complement your type, it won’t last. There’s a quiz here and she also has you tube videos about the different types. It was a lightbulb moment for me because I could suddenly see why some rooms in my home nearly tidy themselves and some were always out of control. And why my solutions in my dc’s rooms weren’t working for them.

I’ve found kallax great and you can get all sorts of inserts on etsy.

I love furniture with hidden storage too like this bench/blanket box and this sofa

Underbed boxes with wheels are great too.

And if you are handy, or know someone who is, you can increase storage by adding shelves to cupboards and wardrobes. There was a lot of unused space on the top half of shelf compartments so I added another.

Baskets/boxes are great for high shelves so you can pull them out and use the space all the way to the back without things getting lost up there.

Don’t buy more storage before you read the Marie Kondo book.

I have 6 big silicone tubs in one kitchen cupboard - one for coffee cups/flasks, another for the Lakeland food storage boxes (they're all the same width and length but different heights so stack and all the lids are the same) another for things like ice pop makers/jelly moulds, another for water bottles, one for sistema lunch boxes and another for things that don't quite fit into the other categories. I do think the key is keeping things like with like and not keeping a single thing that you don't use.

That quiz was weird. I answered questions saying I liked things stored away, so it concluded I was the type of person who is really visual and would like things out on display!Confused

If you're looking at replacing any beds, get an ottoman bed. They're the type with a lift up frame to store things inside.

@thelegohooverer I love the clutter bug quiz..

My favourite storage is my filing cabinet. In addition, nothing makes me happier than finding the right size of plastic storage box to fit inside my existing cuboards/ drawers so I can subdivide stuff.. I"m a cricket!

I also use my labeller a lot.

Before I lived in my current home I was pretty organised & tidy. Unfortunately I have more stuff than this place accommodates easily and am finding it hard to get rid of enough stuff to fit the storage... Sometimes more storage isn't the solution. The solution is less stuff.

I do like kallax, and have found putting extra shelves above doorways handy, but generally I'd agree with decluttering rather than getting more storage being the best option. It took me years to learn this! My house look much better with less in.

I tried to declutter before I bought storage. I have some lovely grey boxes to put stuff in but I'm missing my huge wardrobe

gettingshitstraight · 17/01/2021 18:29

I've organised my kitchen, bedroom and bathroom so far.

I used the Kondo method for getting rid of stuff, clothes folding and sorting stuff into categories with products and ideas from The Home Edit too.

Everything has a place and it's so much easier to stay tidy.
I'm naturally messy and it's changed my life, honestly. I'm not obsessive now (I was when I was getting stuff done) and my house is still very lived in but it's given us some order that we've never had before.

If you don't want to read the books they both have Netflix shows.
So everything is easily visible. Clear boxes and tubs in the kitchen and fridge.
Pasta, rice etc are all in air tight containers.
We have some metal stacking boxes from La Redoute in the pantry for overflow stuff like pasta and tea bags and drinks for the fridge.
We always know what we've got because we can see it. It's not shoved in and piled up.
Our kitchen is really small so needed this badly.

In our bathroom we have storage units with studio tubs inside to keep stuff tidy and in their own categories.

In the bedroom, everything in drawers is folded the Kondo way so it's visible. Even socks and pants. You don't have a pile of tops in a drawer, you fold them so they're all stood up and you can see everything you have and don't just pull out the thing at the top or wreck the whole drawer trying to find something.
Makeup and other beauty stuff is in trays in drawers.

I've got all my separates stored on shelves in my wardrobes-in shallow boxes with clip on lids from the Plastic Box Shop. They're all stored in colours and labelled. and I move the heavy and light clothes around according to the seasons.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 17/01/2021 19:12

Another vote for ikea kallak

trunumber · 17/01/2021 19:37

Thanks so much everyone

(And I know, it sounds like I should declutter but it's mostly not my stuff ... either DH or DS's, neither of whom are the minimalist type!)
