Nipple thrush- arghhh!

EBFing my almost 6 month old and I’ve had thrush on one side for about 6 weeks now. I ignored it for the first 3ish weeks because it was just a pink patch on my nipple which didn’t hurt or itch so I thought it might go away by itself. It then started itching and burning so I went to see the GP who prescribed Daktarin cream for me and gel for my baby (who at this point didn’t seem to have symptoms). Within a few days DS had white patches on his tongue and the pink seemed to be spreading further across my nipple plus it was itchier than ever. Phoned the GP up and was prescribed nystatin for DS and clotrimazole cream for me which I’ve been using ever since to no avail.

I contacted a breastfeeding support helpline and was told to ask my GP for swabs to make sure it’s thrush because it’s rarely ever on one side. I called the GP back again and they said they can’t do swabs because there’s no discharge to swab. I asked whether there’s anything else I can use because the treatment doesn’t seem to be working and I was basically told to persevere.

I’ve started taking grapefruit seed extract drops in water twice a day and I’ve bought probiotics for both me and DS. I daren’t put anything else on my nipple after trying a baking soda and coconut oil mixture last week which just burnt my nipple.

I honestly don’t know what else to do. I boil wash my bras, I’ve stopped using breastpads after reading they can be bad, I’ve been washing DS’s toys and hands regularly etc. Does anyone have any further advice? I’m in so much pain and the itching is unbearable Sad.

I’m in the same situation, it’s bloody painful!!! I think I got mine from a 10 day antibiotics

Mine did a swab though even though no discharge to swab: so I would ask again.

Are you taking a probiotic and eating lots of love yoghurt?

And cut down on yeast, sugar and alcohol!!

OverTheRainbow88 · 17/01/2021 07:05

I’ve even tried live yoghurt in my nipples!!

Norwayreally · 17/01/2021 07:50

I bought probiotics on prime for baby and I so when they arrive tomorrow I’ll start them. Eating lots of yoghurt, will try it on my nipples too. Willing to try anything in all honesty at this stage! I don’t eat much sugar or yeast and haven’t drank alcohol for years.

It’s bloody miserable. Will phone the GP back on Monday for the fourth time Grin. DS doesn’t seem bothered which is the one good thing.

It’s totally miserable; are you treating babies mouth as well? As there’s no point in just treating one of you as can be passed backwards and forwards.

I’ve stopped BFing as son is 2 now but still producing milk!

lancashirelady · 17/01/2021 08:22

I got it 40 years ago and was told by my midwife to let air get to my breasts as thrush loves a moist environment and breast pads are ideal for keeping the nipple moist. Sitting around as much as possible braless and topless cleared it as did drying my breasts with a hairdryer. My son also had thrush in his mouth which the doctor treated otherwise it would have just been a vicious circle.

BounceyBumblebee · 17/01/2021 08:25

I had this, the only visable sign was babies mouth. But it spread inside my breasts and was so painful.

It only cleared up when I took an oral thursh pill. The cream doesn't work because the infection is inside.

zzzebra · 17/01/2021 08:35

I had to anti fungal tablets to get rid of it. Every time I thought I'd got rid of it within a week it was back with a vengeance.

The Nystatin was useless for my DD but she was too young to have Daktarin Oral Gel which I've heard is much better (and available over the shelf if the baby is over 4months).

Norwayreally · 17/01/2021 09:49

Yeah DS had daktarin gel to begin with which didn’t seem to work so GP prescribed nystatin which also isn’t working Sad. I did ask the GP for the tablets but was told they don’t like prescribing them for some reason but I’ll ask again.

Thank you all for your help.

You have my sympathy, OP. As if it's not enough to be a new mum, these things are sent to try us. I know it's not the weather for it (!), but I also remember the good advice of getting as much air as possible to them, avoiding synthetic clothing, hot water and perfumed/harsh shower gel or bath foam and drying with a coolish hairdryer. Towels and bedding should be washed at 60. Dettol laundry liquid is good for pre-soaking other items that need cooler temperatures.

Failing that, tie two pots of live natural yoghurt together with string to make a bra, and sit there imagining you're Madonna in her conical one. It could work. Wink

LunchWithAGruffalo · 17/01/2021 12:09

Could it be a different skin condition? I have ended up with an allergic reaction after one of mine ate something I'm allergic too. Ohh, the itching.

breastfeeding.support/thrush-on-nipples/ mentions a couple of not thrush possibilities too.

Waffle12 · 17/01/2021 12:38

Have you asked your dr about Fluconazole? It's a 1 off tablet u take.

I had thrush about 3 times (my baby has to take daily antibiotics so we can be prone to it).
I only had it on ne side, and baby didnt really have any white patches in mouth so dr was not convinced it was thrush as she said it would be both sides. However I pushed for a swab and low and behold it proved thrush.

Nystatin and creams werent doing anything. On the 3rd time I was prescribed this and it worked a treat.

Norwayreally · 17/01/2021 12:41

I would be inclined to say it’s something else if DS’s mouth wasn’t white plus if you read the thrush symptom list, I have every single one.

I’ll try airing them and putting yogurt on them- might look a bit crazy but I’m honestly past caring Grin. Will call the GP tomorrow to ask for the tablets too, I hope they prescribe them this time. I’m willing to just buy them but when I’ve looked online, they only seem to sell them in packs of three and I’m unsure whether this is a full course or not.

With my first we ended up with a persistent run of it for weeks after she had to have antibiotics; in the end a dedicated few days of medication, naked boobs (thankfully it was summer, get your hearing cranked up!), probiotic supplement for both of us, and a wipe of nipples with vinegar after feeding finally cleared it.

Norwayreally · 17/01/2021 13:10

Did vinegar not hurt it at all? I mixed coconut oil and baking soda together after reading it was good and my nipple was on fire. My nipple looks very dry and flaky so I’m worried vinegar will sting.

Just wanted to pop back on here because I’m still struggling with it a week later.

I was prescribed 150mg Fluconazole on Monday and it seemed to improve Tuesday- Thursday but then I put Daktarin cream on my nipple and within hours it was bright red and hurting again. Guessing I’m allergic to it and had some sort of reaction. Saw an out of hours GP on Friday night because I couldn’t cope with the pain and she examined it, she thinks it’s also bacterial on top of the thrush so prescribed penicillin and another 150mg of fluconazole.

It looks less angry and isn’t painful but it’s unbearably itchy today, I woke up a couple of times in the night with it. I don’t even know what to do at this stage, feel like I’ve tried everything. Is quitting breastfeeding the only option? I don’t want to do that but I just feel really down Sad.

I’m taking 2 probiotic tablets a day, grapefruit seed extract drops and my baby is also having probiotic powder. I’m using clotrimazole cream 2x a day, baby has daktarin gel 4x a day because nystatin hurt his tummy. Any more advice is welcome, I’m desperate!

Stopping breastfeeding may not be hugely helpful as I’m not breastfeeding and still fighting the nipple thrush battle.

Are you 100% sure it is nipple thrush if all that isn’t working?

Could you ask to have another swab or be referred the the local breast clinic?

OverTheRainbow88 · 24/01/2021 11:35

There is a condition that affects the nipple called Paget's Disease that can cause itching.

Just found that on Google... may be worth a Google

notveryrelaxed · 24/01/2021 11:47

I suffered terribly from this with my son, tried absolutely all the remedies suggested and the only thing that worked was strong antibiotics - the first ones they gave me were too low dose age and didn’t touch it. There was an NHS leaflet that stated the dose that worked and I had to take it to the doc and show it before I got it. I would recommend doing that though as it’s the most painful miserable thing I’ve ever experienced - sending you love for that Flowers

Will see if I can find a link to it x

Norwayreally · 24/01/2021 11:56

I scared myself to death reading about Paget’s disease when I first noticed the pink patch last month but I’ve asked the two GP’s I saw in person and one GP on the phone about it and all have said it doesn’t look like that, it’s also virtually unheard of in a young lactating woman.

I just contacted the breastfeeding support helpline and they said I should have been prescribed 150-400mg loading dose of fluconazole (I was prescribed 150mg twice) but then also a lower dose to take every day for 10 days. Looks like I’ll have to phone the GP back again tomorrow and ask Sad.

Ah ok! Sorry didn’t mean to scare you!

notveryrelaxed · 24/01/2021 12:34

Yes it was more like 400g fluconazole that finally sorted it for me! Lower one didn’t have any impact.

Good luck and be very clear if you can x
