Broken arm (full cast) - what on earth to wear!?

40 replies

INeedNewShoes · 17/01/2021 00:00

I broke my elbow and am in a cast from armpit to fingers.

So far I've been wearing a stretchy vest top and a shirt a few sizes too big that I've cut the sleeve off.

I'm having to have help putting my bra on which isn't a long term solution as although I have help at the moment, usually it's just me and DD (3) at home.

Does anyone have any suggestions for clothing in this situation?

I had this a couple of years ago.
I didn't bother with a bra. mainly wore a baggy t-shirt under and a couple of oversize cardigans (charity shop).

it's annoying isn't it?
I hope it heals well and bloody soon.

Not had a broken elbow but I have used a close fitting gilet to restrain/disguise the relative lack of restraint

I’m having surgery on my wrist and was advised to buy crop top type bras for ease of getting them on one handed. I bought these from John Lewis: bra top - the support isn’t mega if you have big boobs but they are divinely soft, comfortable and stretchy so I THINK you would be able to get them on over your cast. What a pain! I feel for you BrewCakeFlowers

The sloggi zero deal bra tops aren’t too bad for a FF cup. I’m a 30 band and got a small. Size on your band size and ignore their chart mostly.

Ponchos, Tabards. Kimono sleeves are all good for roomy sleeve stuff. Gilet maybe for warm, uniqlo ultralight down is very lightweight and toasty. Poor you.

Oh men’s pyjama button up tops in big size would be very roomy in sleeve. Or large men’s flannel shirts maybe.

@GlowingOrb - thanks for your post which has made me feel a little more positive. I will cut some sleeves off long sleeve tops. At the moment I'm wearing my dad's old shirts with the sleeve cut off which works but I think in the long run anything I can do to feel like the normal me is going to help, if that makes sense.

@BluebellsGreenbells thanks for the poncho tip. I'm going to get a nice cheerful yellow one Smile

What about a crop top as a bra, or even a swimming costume with the crotch cut for toilet access. Kind of like a tight body, hopefully long enough to tuck in to a waistband and so keep the costume top down and secure.

@alwayshappensonnye

I'll PM you in a bit.

Your plate picture has surprised me so at least I can start getting used to the idea of something similar.

Have you had a physio appointment yet? I hope they can help you to get your head around the metal.

Next do nice, and quite supportive for big boobs, secret support vest tops that you could step into - might be much easier than a crop top to get on.

LongDivision · 20/01/2021 09:13

You teach whilst alone with a 3yo, plus a broken arm? You are a hero.
My suggestion would be medical scrubs - they are usually cheap and easy to get on and plenty of range of moment.

mnahmnah · 20/01/2021 09:15

Have you got stretchy fabric short sleeved tops or dresses that you can wear with a cardigan?

Tigger83 · 20/01/2021 09:21

H&M do maternity vest tops with a built in bra would that help?

alwayshappensonnye · 20/01/2021 10:58

@INeedNewShoes I'm presuming I need my laptop for a PM so I'll get it charged up, it'll be nice to keep track of how we're doing.

Physio saw me after my consultant check which you're having on Thursday. It was very brief though. What I did find comforting though was that they were actually there, in person. Given the current climate, I expected all physio to be done remotely but they assured me that it would be face to face.

@LongDivision

For various long and complicated reasons DD and I are not at home but combined households with my parents so they are looking after DD at the moment. We won't be able to go home until I am able to look after DD safely by myself. She's a very capable 3 year old and can look after herself quite well in many respects but until i can parent properly it wouldn't be fair on her for us to be home just the two of us. I'm very lucky to have family and friends who will help us.
