Do any of you cycle to work? Bike recommendations please

I am in my early 30s and haven't cycled since I was a child / occasionally on holiday.

My new job across the other side of the city is easier/faster to get to by bike than driving through the city center.

Any recommendations for city commuting? It will also partly be in parks/ muddy puddles.

Thanks!

Is there somewhere out of rain you can lock your bike at work, OP?

I find Brommie is like riding an overlarge scooter. It's doable... but a bit weird.

Seems to me like OP's budget will be < £300 and she is only fair weather cyclist. Novice so not right to invest a lot. A lightweight 2nd hand hybrid WITH pannier rack (so glad someone said something about that, I will never understand commuters with backpacks) is what to look for. Ideally with mudguards.

Also budget for lights (microUSB ones are great) and a decent lock -- my decent lock lives at work locked to the rack so I don't have to lug it back & forth.

MNers will happily comment if OP wants to post some links to Ebay bikes that seem about the right thing.

I love my giant liv for commuting. I went for a carbon frame about £1000 mark as it is lighter and I live in the mountains so that was a big factor.
Definitely recommend panniers over a rucksack. Not only is it better distribution of weight, if you do fall off it is safer not to land on a rucksack.

I have a (much older) version of this: www.liv-cycling.com/gb/bikes-alight-2021 It's lightweight and the pannier rack makes taking stuff to work much easier. I've other bikes, but this is perfect for commuting.
