Ca125 test and cyst on ovary

Six months ago I had a period which didn't stop bleeding for 5 weeks. I came on my period 20 days after that and then 20 days I came on again with really bad pmt symptoms. I was investigated and found that a. I had thickened womb lining and my copper coil was in the wrong place and b I had a cyst on one of my ovaries.
The biopsy on my womb came back clear and my coul was removed and I had a ca125 bloodtest and a request ti come back in 3 months to check the cyst.

I heard absolutely nothing..no results from the old test and I tried my hardest to book a scan but was told it was not urgent

Today I've had a letter stating that my ca125 levels done last June were raised to 51 and that my scan is urgent.

Its not looking good is it. God knows what my levels are now. I've got cancer haven't i ?

The strange thing is my periods are now completely normal, I had no abnormal bleeding, no bloating, no pain and I feel very well.

Please reassure me. I've googled

Ca125 indicates inflammation which could absolutely be a simple cyst that will resolve by itself

Cancer is normally a much higher figure (can be in the thousands).

Ca125 at that level is an indicator for further tests but not a great clanging alarm bell for the worst case scenario

So it is not time to panic but indicates you need the scan and should have this done without unnecessary delay

Even if the cyst turned out to be cancerous in many cases surgery = curative treatment

What age are you?

I am not a medic but I am an ovarian cancer survivor.

To echo PP CA125 test can go in to many 1,000s. I had levels of 80, it was fibroids causing it. It can be an indicator of cancer but it isn’t necessarily cancer. Good luck Flowers and try not to worry.

Thanks im 43.

I think because there's been a delay in getting me rescanned i think that's why I'm worrying so much.

I was supposed to have a scan and an appointment back in October but the ultrasound insisted my scan wasn't urgent

I feel so well too. Much better than I did in May June with all this rogue bleeding

Your post is very similar to my own experience over the summer (but no coil). After bleeding for 5 weeks my bloodwork showed an elevated Ca125, so my Dr. followed standard protocols and sent me for an ultrasound. This showed a thickened womb lining so I was referred to a consultant for a hysteroscopy. He found some cysts on one of my ovaries, took a biopsy and sent me for a CT, after which I also had an MRI. By this time my periods were back to normal and at no point did I have any bloating or discomfort either. I've since heard back from the consultant and there's no sign of cancer.

Like you I'd "consulted" google and was thinking the worst, even though common sense would suggest cancer unlikely with the lack of any other symptoms (plus I'm 52 so peri-menopause also likely to be playing a part). I'm grateful my Dr. referred my so quickly though the speed of it all seemed really scary at the time.

Hope this helps!

I had raised ca125 of 52 then repeated and it was 51. Also had an urgent scan and was so worried. However nothing sinister was found. I have pcos and they've offered me a laparoscopy for endometriosis. Goodness knows when that'll be. The gynaecologist said the level was not that high and can be raised for any sort of inflammation.

blackheartsgirl · 16/01/2021 16:24

Gingerperfect Thank you! It does a bit.

My mum had ovarian cysts in her late 40s,quite nasty one which involved surgery but were benign so I wonder if I'm prone to having them.

Glad yours experience was positive:) 😃

I have endometriosis and fibrosis. My CA125 went up to 180 at one one point which promoted my doctor to send me for lots of scans and tests. All was fine .

I used to have my ca125 checked every 6th months and it dropped to about 150 last time but seems to stay quite high.

Try not to worry - as others have said it can be a sign of something that needs investigating but my gynaecologist was never worried once he’d seen my scans.

Apple1971 · 16/01/2021 16:29

Just to add I also have cysts - but the type that come and go each month. Can’t remember what it’s called!

Fallulah · 16/01/2021 16:30

Don’t panic, and stop googling. My CA125 was higher than that when I was in my early 30s (although I was told nowhere near the figure that would indicate something sinister) and I had the same panick but just had a large dermoid cyst that had to come out. I’d had one the other side years earlier and lost the ovary that time so I recognised the pain and that was what prompted the tests.

I think it’s a good sign that you feel so well and don’t have any worrying symptoms. Hope you get answers soon.

LickEmbysmiling · 16/01/2021 16:35

Hi op, I also had a raised 125 and had agonising about 8, 9 weeks before I was scanned!! Even though it said urgent, the waiting is the killer! Its so awful op.

I had scan and another test and it had gone right down. I had to push, suggest to docs I had another test etc... They are so snowed under, people off sick you need to be proactive.
Good luck op and as pp said it can be in the 100s...

blackheartsgirl · 16/01/2021 21:42

Thank you everyone. You have all put my mind at rest a bit x

I fell off my horse, and had an emergency CT scan, where they found an 8cm mass in my abdomen. I had an ultrasound, and an MRI scan. They thought it was ovarian, but wasn't sure if my tube was involved. My ca125 was around 80. I'm 5 years post menopausal too, which increased my risk.

They went in, and took out both ovaries and tubes and found that the bowel was stuck to the front of the abdominal wall. My cyst had also increased to 10cms.

It was benign.

I know it's easier said than done, but Google is not your friend here - try not to worry - most are benign.

Pinkstars2501 · 16/01/2021 22:28

Mine is about that OP. I have stage 3 endometriosis which is what they put it down to. I did have a biopsy taken when I had a laparoscopy which came back as benign. I have a cyst 10cmx 5cm big but they can't remove it because everything is stuck together.

Not ideal, but not cancer Smile

Autumn101 · 16/01/2021 22:36

Similar to some others, mine was around 75. I had a hysteroscopy and laparoscopy a few months ago and have stage 4 endometriosis and a 6cm cyst which can’t be removed as it’s too adhered to my bowel and bladder. Had loads of biopsies taken and all benign. My consultant was 99% sure that would be the case as her view was cancer is generally in the 1000s
