What has happened to us?

There are four ambulances and a serious incident response unit at my local park, apparently as a result of a sledging accident.

You'd think, wouldn't you, that if anyone needed to say anything on the local FB page, it would be to wish the child(ren) well?

Oh no. Pages of people wondering why anyone would be stupid enough to let their child take a sledge out when the NHS is under pressure, begging people not to risk wasting precious resources. Etc etc. Several pages before anyone wished the child well.

What have we become? Are we really supposed to lock our children up for weeks on end? And has it really become OK to publically gloat and blame when a child is potentially seriously injured, even while the incident is still going on?

I really hope the child is ok. I can understand why people would be uneasy but what's done is done, have some compassion for god's sake.

NastyBlouse · 16/01/2021 15:40

Four ambulances? That sounds serious.

I’m with you OP, four ambulances should equal nothing except concern and well-wishing.

I would definitely not recommend going for a walk.

I went for a walk, slipped on some mud and broke my arm.

I must apologise to the NHS for being so irresponsible and using their valuable resources.

Obviously I've learned my lesson and have not left my sofa since.Grin (not really, I've been on plenty more walks, just a bit more cautious about pesky mud)

My DS15 hasn't left the house all week. If it was snowing, he'd want to go sledging (as he did over Christmas) and I would not only allow him but I would encourage him. We are supportive of lockdown and not 'oooh won't anyone think of the ruined lives of our children' type people at all, but I would love for that boy to go outside for an hour.

Whenwillow · 16/01/2021 15:49

That does sound serious. I really hope they are OK.
I agree with you OP.

Tickledtrout · 16/01/2021 15:51

I agree OP. Some people have no where to go and nothing to do and now get to see this miserable situation as somehow virtuous. Never mind the sendentary lifestyle that's exacerbating obesity and all the attendant health risks that brings, including increased adverse effects of covid.
Hope the child is ok

Thetruthfairy · 16/01/2021 15:56

I agree with you. I took my kids sledging yesterday, they had so much fun. It was lovely to see them so excited after months of.. blah.
Really hope the child is okay.

There was a main road closed near us the other week, and I had to take a detour on the way home to avoid it. From across the fields you could see smoke billowing and blue flashing lights everywhere.

I got in and on our local FB page, people were reporting the incident, saying the road was closed. Dozens of people were jumping in saying 'not again' and that the road was an accident blackspot, and it was all down to dangerous drivers, and it was a disgrace that people drove so appallingly and caused accidents, and when were people going to start driving responsibly, and how many more times were people going to get killed etc etc.

Then someone pointed out that actually it wasn't an accident at all, but a commercial vehicle with its load on fire.

ktp100 · 16/01/2021 16:10

Would it have been nice if people had queried about or wished the best for the child before airing their opinions, yes.

Bur do they have a point? Also yes!!

The facts are the child may not get the same level of care they would have pre-Covid, as is the case for anyone now who has an accident at the moment and that's obviously dreadful.

Accidents are always going to happen but at the moment I think we do need to be considering this before doing unnecessary things.

Am I happy to stop my child sledging if we get some snow? Not really BUT am I happy to risk an ambulance taking hours to arrive if he's lying in the cold with a possible brain injury or bad break? Absolutely not!!

We do need to be thinking about these things at the moment, whether we like it or not.

And less with the 'crossing the road' bollox - you really can't compare necessary things with bloody sledging, FFS!

AnyFucker · 16/01/2021 16:32

Certainly where I live it is so rare to get proper, sledgeable snow that I would, if I had young kids, be taking them sledging

SunshineandShudders · 16/01/2021 16:52

Is it OK for me to walk down to the post box? I haven't been out today but I do have to cross a busy road. And if I should be unfortunate enough to have a nasty accident, would it be OK for you all people to be telling my family I got what I deserved?

How many walks, involving crossing roads, are "necessary" and what is the relative risk of crossing the road v sledging? I bet they're not that different.

I slipped coming out of the shower and fractured my elbow. Maybe I should never shower again and stay in bed?

Well quite, exactly how many showers pw are necessary?

How about this fella then here

SunshineandShudders · 16/01/2021 17:01

I don't understand, no one's saying he shouldn't have taken the risk. Are people only vile after the worst has happened?
