Where have all the cheese planes gone? (Long time grating...)

LaMarschallin · 16/01/2021 10:51

My cheese plane broke just before Christmas.
No problem, I thought, I'll pick one up next time I'm at the supermarket.
None there, so I asked family and friends to keep an eye out.

None in Morrisons, M&S, Waitrose or Sainsbury.

Last night I got around to looking online and everywhere they were out of stock:
Amazon
Lakeland
Robert Dyas
John Lewis
etc

Does anyone know where to get one or is this some weird side-effect of Brexit?
Only thinking that because it was a Dutch friend who introduced me to them and, back then, they weren't easily available here and she brought me one back from Holland.

But that was decades ago; surely we manufacture them here now?

Grateful for any advice on how to procure one.

I love our cheese scraper - the name DD gave it aged 3ish.
I use the strange shaped grater holes for nutmeg

I don't know ok but I read the title of your post in the tune of 'Where have all the flowers gone?'. Yes, lockdown has got to me....

Talking of incredible Dutch kitchen utensils, are you all aware of the wonders of the flessen likker? It means jar or bottle licker, and it's just a really handy scraper / spatula to get the dregs our of jars. Excellent on peanut butter.

Linky to the Hema one, in the hope that we may soon shop there again... fingers crossed

My brother likes to be a bit pretentious in his early teens and called it the "avion de fromage" Grin

Jijithecat · 19/01/2021 17:21

Wow I didn't realise we had Hema stores in this country. I thought they were just for browsing on holiday.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 19/01/2021 17:26

I love my cheese plane. It was from ARKET, has a wooden handle and is a thing of beauty. Not sure if they still have them.

WrongKindOfFace · 19/01/2021 17:28

I’m very pleased you managed to get one.

But I am saddened to learn that Hema may not survive.

And you would have been correct to do so; thank you for noticing Smile

The spiky holes are for grating nutmeg and French box graters don't have them. They use a tiny nutmeg grater. I've never used them for grating nutmeg but for zesting lemons for lemon curd.

SnugglySnerd · 19/01/2021 19:42

I use the spiky holes on the grater to grate nutmeg.

blueirises · 19/01/2021 20:18

We've lost our Hema in Kingston Sad

But they've left a message on the door to say the one in Kensington High Street is still open.

Sorry, missed this before.

But yes! Dutch friend's mother was very proud to introduce me to one.

And thank you to people who've told me about the nutmeg-grating use of the spikey holes.
I'll be trying that soon; it makes me annoyed to have part of a kitchen gadget that I don't know to use.

@LaMarschallin
I'm another one that likes a bit of toast with my butter, especially cold toast and Frank Coopers original Oxford marmalade.

picklemewalnuts · 20/01/2021 11:11

Ooh, what's a flessen likker?

picklemewalnuts · 20/01/2021 11:24

Ah, I see. They've got the odd one on Amazon.

LaMarschallin · 20/01/2021 13:57

I see you've found out about those.
They're excellent for getting those last bits of vla out in preparation for a vla flip:

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vla

Vla, my friend insists, is nothing like custard.
Oh no.

it is tho'

We always use the spiky side of the grater to grate Parmesan, goes really fine and melts really quickly. I thought that was normal, but obviously not as no-one else has suggested that as a use?!

Deathraystare · 20/01/2021 15:16

Blame it on that Sarah lady from the programme about upcycling or whatever it is. She was telling someone the other day that you can get a tea light holder from a simple cheese grater!

She is not having mine!!!
