Craft projects for bored teen and me

ditavonteesed · 16/01/2021 08:49

We have reached peak lock down boredom and I am after ideas for craft projects that would interest a very arty teen and a very unarty me.

Reasonably challenging so as to take a wee while but not so challenging as to be frustrating.
Any ideas welcome. Thanks

Bob ross style oil painting? We have started that and it is amazing how easy it is to get a reasonable painting.

Or spinning wool with a spindle is great fun. You can then take up knitting or crochet too!

Paint by numbers? You can get personalised canvases that are very detailed but straight forward to paint.

Macrame. Pot holders etc are back in fashion. A big hit for mine at Christmas.

Tiger sell lovely books cheaply so you could try...

Calligraphy?

Upcycling old clothes that would have gone to charity shop.

painting a mural in teens room

Candle making - if you do different layers of colours it can take ages. Ditto bath bombs and soaps
In my teens I learnt to cross stitch - if they are arty a proper stitching piece - all different stitches like french knots, slip stitches etc can be a real challenge
Needle felting

Not what you asked for, but how about reading a book together?
There are lots of biographies of Artist. You could discuss and look at their art.

Not really craft, but constructing: my DD got www.ugears.de/en/collections/frontpage a ugears treasure box for Christmas. She really enjoyed making it and now has a cool thing. She's 14. She also got some matchitecture, but that is more labour-intensive.

If you have a glue gun have a look at button art. Loads of fab examples on Pinterest, basically making art from buttons mounted on fabric. Can be as complex or simple as you make it.

Perfect time to take up knitting or crochet. theknitwitch on youtube has excellent tutorials.

Long one but get her to design an item of clothing she'd love to wear, then make a pattern for it, cut it and learn to sew it on a sewing machine. That will develop excellent skills and be something she's really proud of.

Do the same with an item of jewellery.

Find a complex recipe she'd love to taste and practise it a few times together. I have a friend whose family does some sort of cooking challenge, copying one of those day time shows where people invite each other over and mark each other and the highest scorer wins the prize. Each member of the family has to cook a three course meal and provide entertainment. They do it once a year. Could be fun.

Get on Garageband or similar and write a song together. Make a video for it and post them on you tube.

Get a canvas or board or just some cardboard about A4 or maybe a little bigger. Look for old tickets, programmes, photos, and make a memory board of nice days out. I’m thinking of doing one of past holidays.

If you have any old jumpers that are way past best make them in to cushion covers.

Learn how to do macrame it’s a bit 1970’s but doesn’t require much just string or cord and a stick and it’s easy I did it as a kid in the actual 1970’s :)

Lino printing. You can get the kit from online craft shops. Lots of inspiration on Pinterest

Needle felting? Stabbing stuff is quite therapeutic!

I was given a needle felting set at Christmas and you’re so right! There’s something really satisfying about it.

It’s a really easy hobby to learn and you don’t need much to get started.

I've been making bunting out of old scraps, pillow cases etc, to hang out when this is all over. May have enough to do me, my neighbours and my work placeGrin
