How to take up running/exercise

I want to take up some form of exercise, possibly running but don’t know how to start (please don’t think I’m being silly). I’m not exactly the healthiest I.e I get breathless easily as I’m out of shape. However, I am not overweight I just want to lose the extra baby weight that’s I’ve been struggling to lose from dieting alone . Does anyone have any tips

Couch to 5k app is brilliant for beginner runners. Highly recommended.

I like Les mills online. That’s about £11 a month but free for a fortnight. Lots of options on there for classes whenever you want.

Yoga with Adriane on YouTube Is free and I like her.

Couch to 5k definitely works, I think there’s a thread in it here somewhere. You could always do a joe wicks a few times a week to start with to gain confidence before going running? Any of the PE with joe ones would be good fun, free, and pretty quick.

Another vote for C25K! You’ll be amazed how fit you get then you can tackle other exercise and enjoy it more as you’re less out of breath. Even just brisk walking is great

Yep, couch to 5k is absolutely worth a try. I so wished I'd known a few years ago.

Decent shoes and a good high impact sports bra!

MyBigToes · 14/01/2021 22:14

@ErrolTheDragon I love this Grin

The exercise section normally has a C25k support thread, and with new year and lockdown, a lot are starting up.

For anyone not ready for contemplating running yet, parkrun has recently launched a "parkwalk" walking plan to guide people to building up to walking 5k which is then a good base for learning to run.

Couch to 5k NHS app, yoga/Pilates in between run days and @ErrolTheDragon is absolutely right - decent trainers are a good investment but a good quality sports bra is a must!

You've got some great advice here already. If you fancy adding strength training, it's amazing for shaping your body and burning calories too. The nike training club app is free and has workouts for people starting out, with and without equipment.

Whatever it is you decide to do, go slowly and build in speed and resistance after you've nailed the correct form, to prevent injury. And don't neglect stretches before and after exercise. Your muscles will thank you!
