Comfortable shoes I can walk in for hours

Help me please! I'm on mat leave at the mo, which coupled with lockdown means I am doing a LOT of walking. I really need a comfortable pair of shoes. I want some which won't look ridiculous round town I.e. not full on hiking boots, but which offer decent support. Most likely to be worn with jeans. Need to be able to wear them in damp weather.

Any suggestions of where I could look? I have wide feet. And probably going to be bought online so easy returns is essential in case they don't fit.

I find FitFlop shoes very comfortable and supportive (I have plantar fasciitis and tried Skechers, but they made it worse in the long run) (not that I was going for long runs...).

StormyLovesOdd · 14/01/2021 15:58

Sorry, I have no advise to add but I feel your pain (literally)

FourEyes I have plantar fasciitis too and I can never find comfortable trainers are FitFlop trainers any good and are there any particular ones which have been better for you?

Sorry to derail your thread OP

Skechers arch fit have an insole to support the whole foot, i have found these really good for my feet, as my heels roll outwards and I get PF too.

What’s your budget?

Dr martens, kickers

What’s wrong with a good pair of trainers?

Read the description - different models are designed to do different things and cushion in different places. Find some supportive ones (helps if you know whether you pronate or are neutral).

Once you find a comfortable pair make a note of the brand and model and find your nearest outlet.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 14/01/2021 16:20

Do they have to be shoes? I have walking trainers (look in places like Blacks/Mountain Warehouse/Cotswold Outdoor) and they are a dream to walk in. My pair are Meindl, which are not cheap but last forever and are the most comfortable walking shoes I’ve owned.

samlovesdilys · 14/01/2021 16:22

I have some very comfortable shoes from hotter...

Fly London ankle boots can go for miles!

Trainers aren't so good in the rain

WintryShowers · 14/01/2021 16:28

Meindl. Make sure they have a goretex layer.

Fairystory · 14/01/2021 16:30

If you are not too bothered about fashion, Hotter do wide fitting and are comfortable and supportive shoes. Ecco is more expensive and also have comfortable supportive shoes though not sure if they do wide fitting. Since having plantar fascitis, these are what I wear.

Gliblet · 14/01/2021 16:33

Mountain Warehouse do some really good waterproof walking trainers. Also do have a look at their walking boots - mine look like slightly chunky trainers when I wear them with jeans, they don't look like I've togged up in full mountaineering gear for a trip to Aldi Grin They're also light and don't need wearing in.

DeadButDelicious · 14/01/2021 16:35

I got this pair of hotter boots for Christmas (they are called whisper) and they are brilliant. I broke my ankle last summer (three places had to to have pins and plates put in) and found that when I was allowed to start walking again, despite my best efforts I was limping and my hips were really hurting. The boots have changed all of that, my foot feels supported and in the correct position, I don't limp anymore and my hip pain is all but gone I can go for a good distance in them, I'm already eying up a pair of smart black ballet flats, just in case we ever get to go anywhere ever again. I am a complete hotter convert! Grin

I wear Adidas terra x trainers and find them really comfy.

murbblurb · 14/01/2021 17:08

Mountain warehouse do good walking shoes - no fit for purpose shoe ever looks ridiculous. With wide feet you can buy from the bloke range, anything made for women is by definition poor quality and overpriced. MW also don't fart about with designs, I ordered a replacement pair of these a few months back, same size as the previous pair - and they fit perfectly. Really comfortable and supportive, decent grip - what shoes should be.

obviously jeans aren't a good choice for damp weather, so you could top up the order with some quick dry trousers.

FourEyesGood · 15/01/2021 07:10

@StormyLovesOdd I don’t have FitFlop trainers exactly; I have some of their walking boots (which I’ve worn most days through winter) and some smartish shoes (with a sort of semi-trainer-like sole) which I wear for work in a school. They’re from the men’s range because I have big feet, but I think the cushioning and support are the same as the women’s ones.
They’re expensive but my foot no longer hurts anything like it used to, so I consider it money well spent.

endofthelinefinally · 15/01/2021 07:16

Hotter. (I have 2 pairs of whisper boots). They last for years. I only wear hotter shoes now because I have painful, arthritic feet and can't walk in any other brand of shoes.

Iggly · 15/01/2021 07:18

Trainers! Running trainers as they’re designed for long distance.

sueelleker · 15/01/2021 09:15

Cushion-walk are very comfortable. I had to switch to them when I had a bunion operation. They go up to something like a 5E fitting.

MellieNelba · 15/01/2021 09:20

I have got to admit I turned my nose up Hotter boots but my friend kept going on about the whisper boots. I bought some in the sale. I now have a black, tan and blue pair. My job involves a lot of walking and on my last trip to NewYork they were a godsend.

PurpleDandelions · 15/01/2021 09:25

Hiking/walking trainers every time.
I walk at least .5 mph faster in decent trainers than in the comfiest of boots.

MaggieFS · 05/03/2021 20:01

Not sure if anyone will come across this again, but just to say thank you all for the input! I looked at all of the suggestions and in the end went for a pair of walking shoes from Mountain Warehouse. They have a lovely wide fit waterproof pair which I am very happy with. They are a bit more bulky than what I originally had in mind, but will be incredibly useful as they are still less bulky and easier to get on and off than my current walking boots.

As the weather is improving, I think I will also get a pair of Skechers or similar, as I've had two pairs before which I've worn out and always found them very comfortable.

Thanks again!

Could you link to the ones you bought please? I’m look for wide fitting walking trainers so these sound ideal. Thanks!

MaggieFS · 05/03/2021 21:42

No probs, I went for these. I also tried some non wide fit ones and the difference was quite significant.
