Should I put a patch on DS's trousers?

Son is two years old and is always rolling around on the ground in the park, crawing on his knees to push is cars around etc and he is wearing away the knees in his trousers. One set of trousers now has a hole in the knee that probably won't last long if its stitched back up again so I was considering putting a patch on. Apart from the hole in the knee they are in good condition and I'm reluctant to throw them away because at this rate we'll be going through 100 pairs of trousers per year. I was thinking to path them up and keep them as trousers for the park so he have fun in them and we can keep other pairs in good condition and not all of them get destroyed.

His dad thinks having patched trousers will make him look like Oliver Twist and people will think we and really hard up and shouldn't have had a kid if we can't give him decent clothes. Ultimitely he is worried that people will talk about us and think we are weirdos. I don't think I've ever seen a child running around in patched up trousers so I was thinking that maybe it just isn't the done thing and I should just get some new trousers for the bairn.

Patch them! You can buy clothes with patches already on the knees and why would anybody care or even notice?

FlibbertyGiblets · 14/01/2021 14:44

I used to patch inside the knee, does that make sense? So yes the knee would wear through but you could catch the threads and sort of tidy them away with needle and thread.

Awwwe happy memories, my children are responsible adults now...

I vote go for it. Otherwise he will burn through trousers none stop. How about getting some funky patterned patches?

My teacher friend loves to see kids with mended clothes, she thinks they have parents who are very caring.

Anotherducker · 14/01/2021 14:50

You can buy embroided, iron on patches for £2-£3 on EBay. I got a Batman one for DS’s favourite trousers because the knee was worn through.

SpudsandGravy · 14/01/2021 14:51

Definitely patch! Not only does it mean you can keep the trousers but it's also lovely, and fun. See if you can get something completely different for the patch - don't try to blend it in.

I've been meaning to do this with some PJ trousers for years. I have the patch, but sadly not the sewing skills :)

Poppins2016 · 14/01/2021 14:51

You could do it with funky patches (contrasting colour/fabric) and it would look like a fashion statement/you bought them like that...

Absolutely patch them, no point in buying loads of clothes needlessly.

Poppins2016 · 14/01/2021 14:52

@SpudsandGravy great minds!

Alicetheowl · 14/01/2021 14:57

Put a patch on the hole in a contrasting colour, but also a couple in other places like thigh on the other leg or shin, so it looks like a fashion statement.

LBunz · 14/01/2021 14:59

I love this! It means so much less waste and clothing being thrown away too. Literally no one is going to mistake him for Oliver Twist just because you’ve patched his trousers, is your husband usually so dramatic Grin

user686833 · 14/01/2021 15:02

On the rare occasions I've seen a child with parched up clothes I've been genuinely in awe. I would assume the parents are eco conscious, educated, have practical skills and just generally not wasteful sort of people who care more about fashion than anything else.

Me personally, love any excuse to buy clothes for my kids so I wouldn't, but this is a big flaw of mine. My kids have never worn a hole through wear because they have so many bloody clothes. I can't help myself and wish I had more self control and was less wasteful. (I never bin clothes though at least, always donate on or recycle).

Apileofballyhoo · 14/01/2021 15:04

It's far more environmentally friendly/sustainable to patch. Making shorts is another option if any knees go close to summer time.

User0ne · 14/01/2021 15:08

You can buy multipacks of patches on eBay and Amazon that come.in loads of different colours.

Both my DS's have many pairs of patched trousers. They're 2 and 4, constantly rolling/crawling around and the knees go on their trousers.

No one has commented on it. I don't know if it's because they don't notice (the range of colours mean they're good matches) or of people are just polite. Either way I don't care. My boys would rather have money for treats than non-holey trousers Grin

Em308 · 14/01/2021 15:28

I used to do this for my son - I bought superhero patches - he absolutely loved them.

PattyPan · 14/01/2021 15:29

Patches are fine, my DP actually spent the weekend a few months ago patching all his trousers that he’d worn through and we are comfortably off (and he’s an adult!). Mending is good for the environment Smile

Alexandernevermind · 14/01/2021 15:34

My 12 yo mini commando SD is always having patches sewn into his casual (tree climbing) trousers. We aren't short of cash but I hate waste.

Alexandernevermind · 14/01/2021 15:35

I didn't mean SD, I meant DS!

SleepingStandingUp · 14/01/2021 15:36

Go for it

I'd put matching patches on both knees in a contrasting colour so it's looks more obvious a design thing of you're worried about people judging (people won't notice)

Knittedfairies · 14/01/2021 15:40

Do it. I patched a pair of my husband's jeans last week; they're fine for working on the allotment.

Hoppinggreen · 14/01/2021 15:41

Of course you should. You can put the patch on the inside or outside

CaptainMyCaptain · 14/01/2021 15:46

I would definitely patch. I patched some of my own jeans, that were becoming worn, on the inside of the knees and embroidered on the outside. This reinforced them and stopped them wearing through. For a child I'd get some lovely contrasting patches.

TomQuinn · 14/01/2021 15:47

Patch absolutely. If he has a t-shirt he's grown out of with a cute appliqué or something like that you could use that. Especially if it's something he's really into. But as PPs have said, there are loads of patches on eBay etc.
Have a look on Pinterest if you're good with a needle and thread, there are cute monster patch ideas in there.

ElectricMistofelees · 14/01/2021 16:03

Have you seen the ones on Pinterest where they are patched with comic fabric? They are done so it looks like Spider-Man is peeping through the hole! They’re amazing!

Aria999 · 14/01/2021 16:06

Lol I patch DS's. (5). He goes through them really fast! I don't really care what people think! Anyone who would be judgy about that isn't worth worrying about.

I can't get the iron on ones to stay on past one wash so I stick them too. Gonna try the pictures ones mentioned by pp.
