Outer Hebridies with teenagers

I'm looking at holidays to cheer me up, I am well aware we may not be going this year at all but just want something planned (if not necessarily booked)

I really like the idea of the Outer Hebridies, we can take the dog, no flights etc.

But which island should we go to, if we want to visit other islands will the ferry add £££ to the holiday, will teenagers be bored out of their brains, will it be infested with midges in the summer?

Anyone been or lives there that can offer some advice?

Have you thought about Mull, its quieter than Skye but has slightly more going on that Harris and Lewis, lovely beaches and you can go to Iona or even Staffa to see Fingals cave. The wildlife is more varied too and its easier to get to.

Hmmm it just looked so pretty on the photos but my boys can absolutely not stand bugs of any kind. My son freaks out if there is a solitary fly taking an interest in his picnic so the talk of midges is putting me off. Maybe a holiday for me, DH and the dog to take without the kids 🤔

What about Scilly if you fancy UK island hopping but not midges?

In that case, forget it as a summer destination. Early spring perhaps?

Having spent a whole summer working outside on Harris when i was a student the midges aren't much of a problem on the beaches because there's usually a brisk breeze to keep them away. It's dawn and dusk that they're bad.
