Italy - 6 Weeks?

GlobeUs · 14/01/2021 13:33

Post Covid Planning (more of it...)

I'd love to go to Italy for a six week touring holiday. I've been to Rome for four hours (post work-meeting), and I have been skiing in the North a couple of times.

I do want to go back to Rome, I want to go up a Volcano, and visit the Dolomites for a few days, go snorkelling for a few days and then I haven't figured out where else - if you have been what would you recommend?

Amalfi coast...Positano. I've not been but looks wonderful and it's on my bucket list.

Venice if you haven't been. I stayed on Lido island away from the city centre.

Hope others have more ideas.

Fly to Verona.
Dolomites + maybe Lakes.
Train to Rome.
Rome (ahhhh, Rome)
Train to Amalfi.
Home via Naples.

What a lovely thought.... daydreaming myself now.

Cinque Terre villages are gorgeous. The lakes, Como and Maggiore are my faves. I fancy the Dolomites and Verona and Bergamo.

And in six weeks you can nip to Sicily

480Widdio · 14/01/2021 19:24

I lived in Italy for many years.

The Cinque Terre is stunning.Much busier than it was years ago though.

I love Capri, something so special about it,I would recommend staying,so that you can experience in the evenings when the Day Trippers have left.

Venice of course! but not in the season when it is packed with visitors, last time I went in the Winter, even with the Aqua Alta.

Places like Orvieto in Umbria.

Thank you, I am googling everything!

I would love to go to venice but was told it's better to go when it's cold as it smells, is that right?

I kind of would like to do this trip in warmer temperatures...

These are really great suggestions, please keep them coming.

I went in May. Did not notice a smell. Smell or not, go to see it!!

I travelled a few summers ago. Only for two weeks and we drove. OH went a few weeks early in his car and met me at Venice airport.

I went in August and didn't notice the smell. Venice is a must - it's my favourite.

We did Sorrento (I wasn't bowled away by there to be honest but it's near amalfi coast). Amalfi coast particularly positano is beautiful. We did lake como (bellagio) - incredible. Did Rome. A couple of short stop offs too and one of which was Tuscany, we booked a random place to stay and booked in a wine tour with dinner etc.

GlobeUs · 14/01/2021 19:46

These places are amazing - I knew about some of them, but many of them I didn't.

Ok, will definitely put venice on the list then. Would love to do Sicily too (could snorkel and do my Volcano there).

How long is advisable for Rome in terms of days? And Venice?

Also no one has mentioned Milan - is it just a fashion city (this wouldn't really be my thing)

If food is your thing, then Bologna (which has a train station which is sort of like Birmingham new street in terms of being able to get a train there from anywhere) is a great city. Not as beautiful as Florence or Venice or Rome, it charming none the less.

BillyAndTheSillies · 14/01/2021 19:50

I'd skip Milan and do Verona instead. Beautiful city.

Similar to a pp, highly recommend that if you can get to Capri, stay overnight. The island is absolute magic when the day trippers have disappeared. One of my favourite places on the planet.

pontresina · 14/01/2021 19:50

Sicily is supposed to be wonderful but very, very, very hot.

I can't do heat very well and I've definitely enjoyed Rome more in May/October than in late July.

You could spend weeks in Rome. Venice I thought 3 or 4 days was enough.

I liked Milan, but it's not really holiday-like. Superb people watching though. The style Envy

catinb00tz · 14/01/2021 19:51

The analog coast is amaaazing

catinb00tz · 14/01/2021 19:51

Amalfi!!!

MrsGrindah · 14/01/2021 19:53

I went to Venice when it was still hot although late September. Didn’t smell and wasn’t too crowded. Absolutely stunning

Cocogreen · 14/01/2021 20:06

We spent about 3 weeks in Italy a few years ago and loved every minute of it. Four days in Rome ( not long enough), a week in Florence, 4 days in Venice, 4 days at Lake Como and a couple in Milan. We had day trips to Pompeii and Naples, Siena and San Gimignano. We went in late March which was cold but not freezing and so really comfortable for walking everywhere. It’s such an incredible country and we only really did the main tourist spots. I hear Bologna is terrific and would love to go there.

CheltenhamLady · 14/01/2021 20:09

We go to Italy twice a year normally. We absolutely love it. The trains are fantastic too.

Our top places are:

Venice
The Italian Lakes - Como, Garda
Amalfi Coast - Ravello, Positano, Capri
Florence
Sienna
Lucca
Lecce

Cinque Terre is nice, but too crowded for me now.

Start with those and you won't go wrong.

DenisetheMenace · 14/01/2021 20:10

Lake Garda

shinynewapple2021 · 14/01/2021 20:39

I like the Italian lakes . Have holidayed in the north where we have travelled to the Dolomites and in the south where we have travelled to Venice, Verona and Milan (although I probably wouldn't hurry back to Milan), and Bologna.

We have a villa in Bardolino booked for June - fingers crossed !!

Also enjoyed Rome, Sienna, Capri and the trulli houses in Puglia worth a visit, liked Lecce too.

BarryGlendenning · 14/01/2021 20:41

I love the Aosta Valley.

shinynewapple2021 · 14/01/2021 20:42

(Before someone comes on and shouts at me the holiday was a rebooking from last year)

GlobeUs · 14/01/2021 20:43

Think I may need 8 weeks...

Oh God, I LOVE Italy, never had a bad time there, and would recommend pretty much everywhere I've been:

Rome, I'd say a minimum of 2 full days, I could have done 2 days on Roman remains alone, let alone the Vatican and wandering the city, and the churches, and, and, and...

Tuscany and Umbria are gorgeous - Florence, Siena, Montepulciano, San Gimignano (I've spelt that wrong, doubtless!), Perugia, Pisa, stunning landscapes and countryside too.

Bologna and Modena. OMG Bologna is one of my faves, it's not one of the big hitters, but it's still beautiful, and the food is the best in Italy. For a country with incredible food, that's truly saying something. We went to some kind of buffet restaurant on a Sunday in Modena, filled with Italians, and it was amazing. DH and I still talk about with the same admiration as meals at Peters and Gordon Ramsay, and was probably about £20-£30 a head.

The Amalfi coast is stunning, we stayed in Sorrento, but it was August, absolutely rammed and HOT. We had really wanted to explore the whole coast, but it was just too packed. But I can't wait to go back out of season, and aid really like to see some of Naples. Pompeii was out of this world, somewhere I'd wanted to visit my whole life, and didn't disappoint (and your volcano could be Vesuvius!). Now want to get to Herculaneum and the museum in Naples to see all the treasures.

I went to Venice for my 30th, when I saw St Mark's Square for the first time, I cried, it was so beautiful and iconic (I was also about 6 weeks pregnant, so hormones may have played a part 😂).

On my list: Milan, Sardinia, Sicily, Verona, the Lakes, the Cinque Terra, Lucca...I could happily visit Italy for every holiday.

EmmaStone · 14/01/2021 20:57

Peter's should read Petrus!

Coffeeandcocopops · 14/01/2021 21:06

Bologna is fantastic.
Modena
Florence
Venice (stay on the islands to the south)
Rome
Lucca
Lakes.

My favourite country
