Am I being a pearl-clutcher?

9 year old DC asked to listen to a song a friend (same age) liked.
It's in Spotify etc, but flagged up as "explicit". Had a mild swear word which I thought was the trigger.
Then I actually listened to it and it's about receiving and enjoying oral sex.
Am I being ott in thinking this is not appropriate for this age group?

No you’re not

If they outright said "suck a dick" or something, yanbu but if it was loose slang then you are a bit. Think back to the lyrics that went straight over your head when you were young, they've been right there, in every era!
Ive caught my kids singing along to loads of very questionable songs off the radio and they have no idea.

depends who explicit it was. can't believe as kids we used to sing along to spice girls 2 become 1 but didn't think anything of it.

My child is too young right now for me to worry about this however I do remember my 7 year old niece singing ‘I hope she’s getting better sex, hope she’s not faking it like I did’ and I was Shock but it’s littlemix and I’d honestly still think they were aimed at a young audience even though they have clearly grown up and so have their songs!

Obviously my niece didn’t even know what she was singing about though!

It's OK to be a pearl clutcher or in other words decide your own values. Good opportunity to say that you don't do swearing in your family, don't listen to explicit versions of songs, and explain that a lot of swear words are highly offensive / misogynistic / violent / offensive to people who follow a religion and that for those reasons you don't want to support artists who use that language by listening to their music.

Depends on what song it is

Watermelon Sugar by Harry Styles is about oral sex but I wouldn’t expect a child to be able to understand that and think it would be fine for a child to listen to

I'd have no issue if DC was older - early teen but someone singing about "going down" and "getting chains out" and "getting off".

Whilst I agree that singing along in innocence may be the case, I am not entirely comfortable with it.
