How do you get your dog to take their flea medication?

He used to take it fine but he's suddenly turned into a stubborn old man and won't take it. We've tried coating it in food but he just licks it off, tried wrapping it in a piece of ham but he ate the ham and spat the tablet out Hmm help!

Coconut oil apparently prevents fleas. I've not given flea treatment in years, just a spoonful of coconut oil in their food every day. Not a single flea and their coats are lovely.

Spot on treatment for flea, and any tablet crushed and mixed in 1/4 tsp Jam. It's the only time he is allowed jam and he dances in anticipation.

I had a lovely big alsatian many years ago.
As she got old, she was on aspirin, I think.
My mum and dad used to wrestle with dog. Try to open her mouth and drop tablet in. Tried hiding it 8n food.
It always got spat out.
I laughed at my mum once, doing all that.
As kids do.
She said ok then YOU do it as mums do.
So I put on a nice excited, playful voice and said "oi, sasha, what's this? Do you want it?" Playing with the dog. Dog must have thought it was something good, as she took it from my hand and ate it.
Mum was laughing and sulking at the same time

Condensed milk - so delicious the dogs have to elbow me out of the way before I get at it!

We give our dog Advocate, easy as you just put drops on their neck

When our dog got fussy and decided that she didn't like the flea pills (they were the ones which are meant to taste nice, and she'd been fine eating them for years) I used to give her them in the park, when other dogs were around. She may not have liked them much, but she wasn't prepared to risk another dog getting her food!

We used a spot on treatment on our dog, but the few times he had to have tablets was easy - he was a Golden Retriever so would eat anything given half a chance!

Our dog eats the tablets fine but used to get very upset with spot treatment. Used to roll on the carpet trying to rub it off.

Small piece of cheese or cocktail sausage , have 3 bits , first empty , second loaded , followed by third unloaded and have his attention on the third bit so he swallows the second quickly anticipating getting the third bit

I have 2 dogs, a lab and a spaniel. Lab is typical lab and will wolf down anything. Spaniel is a fussy devil.
I go into the kitchen and get myself some food- usually my toast for breakfast and then call them both through. I make them both sit down next to each other and then open their tablets. Put the correct tablet in the hand the correct side of the dog, put my hand down and make them do paw (they have to tap the back of my hand properly to get the treat and the lab is a bit squiffy and just waves her arm around!). This palaver ensures that while lab is busy waving her paw around and trying to make contact that the spaniel does paw, gets his “treat” which he scoffs and watches her eat hers. Although recently with treats, spaniel has taken to taking his in his mouth and putting it on the floor until lab has had hers- just to make sure they both get a treat. Very occasionally I have to pick up spaniels treat a second time and give it to him again.
My dogs are not very clever at all 😂

One dog just eats them.
The other we just put it at the back of his mouth and rub his throat. It works so far but I'm dreading the day it doesn't. We never tried to hide tablets in anything and just didn't make a big deal. I think we've been lucky.

@MyNameHasBeenTaken I have no idea but can't hurt to try it. I think the theory is that its like garlic being exuded from your pores and fleas don't like it. Could be bollocks but has worked on both of mine.

Plus it tastes good and I can bribe Ddog2 to take his dewormer with it. Ddog1 will eat anything if I tell her its a treat but he is a bit more discerning.
