Do you think they will manage to impeach Trump?

Realistically do you think there are enough Republicans who are pissed off with him to pass this? I'm assuming there's no likelihood of him resigning, however many people call for it!

If you was impeached for incitement, would that then exclude him for criminal charges for it?

One thing I’m not sure about is whether an impeachment trial has to be wrapped up before the end of Trump’s term or whether it can continue after he leaves office. I have seen articles by leading US constitutional scholars dealing with the political aspects of impeachment (ie whether Congress should do it or not) and some assume it can be done after he leaves and some assume the opposite. I haven’t seen any that set out one way or another what the state of the law actually is, or if no one knows (because no one has been impeached so close to leaving office) what they think it should be.

My own view, fwiw, (I am a US lawyer myself but with little expertise in this area) is that if impeachment were restricted to the president’s term it would make a mockery of Congress’s ability to disqualify him from holding future office. It can’t be right that Trump would get to run in 2024 simply because he committed these horrific offences two weeks before his term ended. But I’d love to see some real scholarship on that.

Impeachment does not preclude criminal charges.

@Wildswim

Bad idea.

America is divided enough.

What we need from all sides is grace and tolerance now. From ALL sides. Not revenge.

You're never going to get grace and tolerance from Trump and his followers. And unfortunately, if you try to take the moral high ground or give them the benefit of the doubt, they take advantage and then things like the Capitol attack take place. So I think it's time for some decisive action that blocks this dangerous man from state power in future.

No.

The Republicans in Congress may privately think Trump deserves to end up in jail, but they are too scared of how their voter base would react if they threw him to the wolves. He will be allowed to go quietly.

I think impeachment is a done deal - the House of Representatives is ready to bring articles to the floor Monday and they easily have a majority for them to pass. The question is whether 67 Senators will convict. I suspect Trump may be trying to make a deal with Mitch McConnell whereby he resigns but gets to leave open the possibility of running again in 2024.

Bernie Sanders nailing it as always.

Do you think they will manage to impeach Trump?
CandyLeBonBon · 09/01/2021 23:41

I wish they'd lock him up and throw away the key but impeachment will do!

TuxedoPantherSheHer · 10/01/2021 00:03

@ItsNotGreenItsBlue

He’s only got about 2 weeks left til he’s out of office, what’s the point?
He’s be barred from running again in 2024. he’d not get pension, travel expenses and security detail for life on taxpayer’s dime.
Corcory · 10/01/2021 00:16

Looks like they are definitely going to try, it's not like they need to search for the evidence!! Do it please, he needs to be taught a lesson. At the same time republicans need to explain to the voters how they were duped and how he did nothing but lie!
