I just can't believe it and I'm a bit gutted to be honest. Any advice on how to deal with this?

Ridiculous, who would calm them marxist? you? do you even know what marxism is? because it sure as buggery isnt electoral politics through a social democratic party. Nor are they in a position of power similar to trump, or spouting violent rhetoric on twitter.

what a suprise....

Labour (in Ireland) are right wing according to that Confused

This thread is a perfect example of batshittery. In fact, compared to where the thread appears to be going, the op's friend sounds relatively sensible.

Anon778833 · 11/01/2021 07:21

Anyone else notice how Trump supporters always start their contributions to discussions like this with ‘I’m not a Trump supporter, but...’ ?

Doingitaloneandproud · 11/01/2021 07:44

OP I've got a friend whose doing this too, this virus was all to control the people, the vaccine will have a chip to get all your info (as if she didn't already give it on Facebook freely) and that today the military will highjack the airwaves for several days straight showing confessions from all governments across the world, then all governments will be disbanded.
She seriously believes all of this and I do worry for the 3 children she's influencing also. I'm distancing myself and not getting into any discussions with her on it, it's not worth it.

pointythings · 11/01/2021 07:53

Ursula President Duterte is both a fascist and a dictator all but name. So very much on the right. Has he incited violence? Absolutely.

You use the word Marxism - some people would call countries like Denmark Marxist, because they have a strong state holding the free market in check, provide proper financial support and healthcare to their people and have high taxes - for which you get a hell of a lot back in terms of services. Are they broadly left? Absolutely.

I'd say Jeremy Corbyn (why can people not spell his surname?) is on the left but not extremely so. He's an asshat and a Lexiter, and I have zero time for him, but he hasn't called for violence and frankly his idea of free universal broadband is looking pretty damn sensible right now.

If you define social democratics as 'left' then yes, your list is going to be a long one. For me, radical left is the Chinese Communist party (though I fully accept in many ways they are not left at all, hence the horseshoe model), North Korea and so on. Not regimes we want to emulate in any way.

This whole 'radical left' and 'alt right' division is a red herring.

Extremism is extremism. Radicalised people on the right or left are identical. I see little if any difference between the people who stormed the Capitol last week chanting 'Hang Mike Pence,' waving Confederate flags and wearing 'Camp Aushwitz' shirts, and members of ISIS intent on killing anyone who doesn't subscribe to their extreme version of Islam. As far as I'm concerned they're the same.

The Far right white supremacists in the US are pretty much the same as Hezbollah. They want to extermination of others (non-whites, Jews ) so that their own 'race' can take complete control. It's not about Left/Right wing. It's about pure race war.

NeedToKnow101 · 11/01/2021 09:17

I have a close friend whose gone down this rabbit hole. We only see each other infrequently anyway, but me, and other friends, have asked her not to push her beliefs on us. I told her it's like trying to push religion on an atheist. She still always wants to talk about it though. It has made me lost a lot of respect for her tbh.

SnappedAndFartedInMaui · 11/01/2021 09:27

@Xerochrysum

I don't like it when people calling it "this shit" etc. It's a mental illness. They need professional help. In a way, they are the victims of modern world.

I do feel scared how things like this can spread to so many normal people, and I don't want to call them names.
So, your action really depends on how the person mean to you. You can stand by them and hope they will come out of it eventually, or walk away. I don't think it's an easy task.

Yeah, I d think this covid crisis has pushed some people into developing anxiety and other related issues like paranoia.

Sadly I have people like this in my life and in would like to be able to be there for them but I have mental issues of my own related to complex trauma. In was brought up in an extreme kind of Bellaire and brimstone kind of faith where we were told about the end of the world, new world order, Mark of the beast etc. I suffered abuse of various kinds as a child as well in that home so just hearing about these things can trigger me badly. I don't want any more breakdowns and my trauma therapist says I need to focus on self care at the moment. I feel guilty and selfish for not being there for my conspiracy focused friends but I just cannot do it.

SnappedAndFartedInMaui · 11/01/2021 09:29

Hellfire not bellaire!

SnappedAndFartedInMaui · 11/01/2021 09:34

What complicated it for me is, I grew up acting out in terrible ways due to the abuse and my own fears many of those ways I behaved were pretty evil. it was like my life was one cry for help, attention etc . The doctors diagnosed me as having a " borderline personality disorder" because I was very chaotic and self destructive.

So when these conspiracy theorists talk about the end of the world, new world order, all I can think the is the messiah coming back and judging me as unclean and unworthy to be "raptured." Sorry for the thread derail

Anon778833 · 11/01/2021 09:35

I find it hard to understand why anyone would want confessions from governments and for everything to be disbanded - how exactly would that make the world a better place with everything descended into anarchy and chaos.

user1471565182 · 11/01/2021 10:00

Dismissing facts because you dont like them there Ursula? reminds me of somebody.......

Yes you were talking out of your backside about china, and not much else has come out of the other end yet.

user1471565182 · 11/01/2021 10:03

How dare this impartial political data not match your preconceived ideas from years of reading right wing dross in tabloids.

user1471565182 · 11/01/2021 10:04

You're right, Kaptain, the trumpnuts premise on here was that 'the far left are as bad on twitter'. They still havnt named a single far left extremist politician in a high position of power inciting violence on twitter.

LeaveMyDamnJam · 11/01/2021 10:05

Those saying once Biden is inaugurated these trumpists will quieten down are wrong sadly. Those deeply in the cultist ideology will become more enraged and dangerous. I am very worried about the next few months in the USA.

DragonWillow · 11/01/2021 10:15

So sad, I lost a very good friend to this - they cut everyone out of their life completely including their family. Just so so sad and unfortunately they are no longer with us - I 100% put this down to QAnon

Chookie89 · 11/01/2021 10:19

@UrsulaVdL " The follow on point was whether that applied to left wing groups too, but mysteriously the answer to that question is No because if they are violence inciting then they are fascist."

LITERALLY NO ONE HAS SAID THIS.

pointythings · 11/01/2021 10:31

Couldn't agree more. And when asked to come up with examples, they name Duterte - I mean, I'd laugh if it weren't so bloody tragic.
Anon778833 · 11/01/2021 10:38

What it seems is that “fascist” is being redefined as “disagrees with me” or “unsavory”

No, it’s not. Fascism needs to be called out - not brushed under the carpet.

Offskki · 11/01/2021 10:54

@NeedToKnow101 your experience/reaction sounds similar to mine. I juts find it difficult to accept that someone with her (science) background and privileges in life has succumbed to such a place of fear and fantasy.

I’m worried too. Are these people going to become a new kind of terrorist who put bombs on public transport?
