Please tell me about your winter heating routine!

I'm in a pickle. Until now, I usually turn my heating off at night and then turn it on when I go downstairs in the morning with the thermostat set to 21 degrees. However it's FREEZING! The last few nights have been so cold (thermostat showing 14c), and it takes the whole morning to actually get the house up to a bearable temperature. I've not really noticed it in previous years, but now I'm WFH, I have to spend the whole morning wrapped in blankets!

What do you all do in the winter? Do you leave the heating on but turn the thermostat down at night? Is it more cost-effective to do this rather than heat the house up from scratch every morning?

Thank you!

@LucyfurMorningstar so appropriate clothing for 5 degrees presumably includes a coat and probably a hat? Inside your own home? How miserable

JustSaying101 · 09/01/2021 12:52

Ours comes on at 6am until 9am, temperature usually at 20-21. Then goes back on between 4pm-7pm, again at 20-21. Sometimes we may switch on for an hour or so during the day as WFH/Home Schooling, however, trying to uselots of fleece sheets, warms throws, fluffy socks, etc to keep warm. Was another thread recently on here about electric blankets - may have to have a look!

Tehmina23 · 09/01/2021 12:56

I hate being cold. If I get too cold I can't get warm for ages. I think I need to emigrate in the winter to Cyprus eg.
I love it in the summer at 25c.

Yes often a woolly hat, dressing gown over my clothes and a sleeping bag. Yes it's stubborness but it's kind of a control thing. Maybe I'm punishing myself as I'll be losing my house once evictions restart (mortgaged). I should have done more to keep in employement.

MaisyMary77 · 09/01/2021 13:09

Mine is 20c from around 5.30am to 10pm then 16c for nights. Detached 1920s house-it’s always cosy but never too warm. I’d be fine if it was set cooler but DH and the kids would be miserable.

igotdemons · 09/01/2021 13:22

We’ve got HIVE and I set up a schedule. It’s generally set to 14c overnight (just to stop any damp occurring in the winter and keep the windows clear of any condensation) and 16c during the day and I boost if I feel chilly. I don’t like a hot house so keep the temperature relatively low for this reason. We pay £51 a month, combined gas and electricity for a 4 bed house. I can’t understand people who have their thermostat set to 21 degrees, it must be stifling and cost a fortune! 😱

CommunistLegoBloc · 09/01/2021 13:25

Ah that's awful @LucyfurMorningstar. I'm so sorry Flowers

Gwenhwyfar · 09/01/2021 13:34

Same problem with no possibility of programming the heating to come on. I realised the other day that it takes one room 5 hours to get really warm!
I don't have a thermostat, except the numbers of the radiator knobs.

Gwenhwyfar · 09/01/2021 13:38

"Today I feel cold for some reason so I've turned it up to 24c!! Very bad I know."

Why is it bad? 24 on the thermostat doesn't mean it's 24 degrees in your room. When I had a thermostat it was often on 30. I wasn't sitting around in my swimming costume because of course it was still only around 21 in the flat.

LER83 · 09/01/2021 14:44

Ours is just left at 19 day and night. If we are sat watching a film and not moving about I might put it up to 20 for an hour. Unfortunately we have a really crappy front door where you can feel the draft coming in, this opens directly into our living room, so this room always has a chill about it. If it wasn't for that we would have the heating set about 17/18.

Gwenhwyfar · 09/01/2021 16:55

" I can’t understand people who have their thermostat set to 21 degrees, it must be stifling and cost a fortune! 😱"

I'm uncomfortable sitting down if it's under 21 degrees. I just can't help that. I always dress adequately so I'm not one of these people who goes around in a T-shirt. I live in small flats so not so expensive to heat and even if it was, I would prioritise it. I can have the rooms I'm not sitting down in with no heating or at a lower temperature of course.

harknesswitch · 09/01/2021 17:00

I keep mine in all the time now I'm working from home and the dc are homeschooling, but I turn the thermostats down to 16 overnight and up to 18 when i get up

BigSandyBalls2015 · 09/01/2021 17:28

^^

NobbyButtons · 09/01/2021 17:37

We have the heating on 7am-8am (9am on weekends) and 3:30-9:30pm, but now we're homeschooling I'm tempted to put it on in the day as well. The upstairs isn't too bad in the day with the heating off; the downstairs gets quite cold. The house warms up quite quickly in the morning.

Gwenhwyfar · 09/01/2021 23:34

"The boiler keeps working until the temperature in the flat reaches what you’ve set on the thermostat .. so eventually it would get to 30"

It never got to 30 in my place.

Ariela · 10/01/2021 00:03

Heating on 6am-8.30am and 4pm-10pm. Log fire in lounge if we fancy it.
Rayburn in kitchen is on for cooking most evenings - no radiator in Kitchen, I do have a doorstop doggie for outside door as door isn't a brilliant fit and can be draughty in a north-westerly wind. Thermostat set at 15-17 depending how cold outside. Small house, double glazed, masses of insulation. Wear a jumper if cold.

Changi · 10/01/2021 08:23

It never got to 30 in my place.

If the heat loss from the house is greater than the output of the boiler, it never will.

Skyliner001 · 10/01/2021 08:26

18c during day, and 16 at night

shallbe · 10/01/2021 08:41

"Alexa, tell Hive to boost the heating"

About 12 times a day.

Caramel81 · 10/01/2021 08:49

Ours is on all the time from around 7am-10pm at around 20 (or 22 on really freezing days). We have it off at night but we’ll have our electric blanket on for an hour when we get into bed and we have a thick duvet

MotherExtraordinaire · 10/01/2021 09:05

@Trulyatraditionalman

Also, I'm in a 2 bed terrace house but it's over100 years old and the insulation is crap. Single glazed windows don't help matters...
We're in a 150 year old house, no insulation etc too.

I set the thermostat at 17,do it's always ticking over, then I turn up if needed in the day.

It is set to turn off at 930pm. As a rule, this keeps me warm enough until I go to bed, sometimes in the early hours, though I left it on new years eve as my lo was also up.

The timer is then to click in during the night, 2ish,for half an hour and then at 530.

It does take time to reheat, but usually by 630am its warm enough to feel hot, as there's no chill.

I wfh normally and I wouldnt need blankets when I start at 730.

Hope that helps.

Bobbybobbins · 10/01/2021 09:11

We have a small oil filled radiator that we can put in overnight when it's v cold to save heating the whole house.

thegcatsmother · 10/01/2021 11:57

We have a thermostat in the hall set to 21, and the heating is on all the time, so it clicks in and out. We have TAGs on the radiators, so can control the temperatures in the rooms as needed. The house is nearly 200 years old, and was let out for 13 years whilst we were abroad, so heating it is the best thing we can do for it.

Nanalisa60 · 10/01/2021 12:20

I hate being cold, so at the moment as I’m in the house much more, it is coming on at 6.30am and go off at 8.30pm I have it on 20 but at 5pm I have been turning it up to 22. It goes off at 8.00pm as I’m very happy at go to bed at 9pm as I have tv in bedroom and I love my electric under blanket. I like sleeping in a cold room with brushed cotton bedding and a 15 tog quilt plus the under blanket in the winter.

I also have nice warm throw/blanket on sofas, and now wear slippers and cosy cloths/pjs in the house, I also bought us both Borg hoody’s and slipper boots for Christmas, they are just so warm and comfortable.
