Hi what are your children eating for lunch while at home?

I have a 14 year old daughter and a 7 year old son and they have mostly been eating sandwiches and crisps for lunch like when they're at school, but because they're at home i want to make the most of it and make lunches a bit more interesting,

thanks Smile

We quite often have sandwich and crisps, beans on toast, omelette with ham and cheese, and a few cherry tomatoes on the side. Or we have leftovers from the night before like chilli or spag bol.

Ploughingthrough · 09/01/2021 01:41

Im overseas, but when we were in lockdown they had Scrambled eggs and toast, beans on toast, courgette and cheese muffins, quiche with various fillings, wraps are all stuff we have instead of sandwiches sometimes. I quite like the muffins and quiche as they helped bake/cook which gave them something to do.

Wow i didn't expect people to reply so quickly, thanks for the suggestions so far.

We usually have a lighter lunch as i do quite heavy meals at dinner time as my husband works long shifts so i like him to come home to a warm meal.

Wraps, pitta pizzas, picky plates with little cubes of cheese, cold meat, gherkins/olives, crackers, fruit, soup and bread, jackets, noodles, pasta, pasta salad, tuna and sweetcorn mayo rolls, cheese on toast, cooked roast chicken with salad bits, pancakes with sweet and savoury fillings, spaghetti hoops on toast...hope that helps!

Peanutbutterblood · 09/01/2021 07:05

Mine (5 and 2) have snack plates at their request, some pepper, ham, strawberries, cicumber, yoghurt, scotch pancake. If that all gets eaten then they have crisps

actiongirl1978 · 09/01/2021 07:11

My two eat random stuff. DD 12 ears houmous and veg/beans on toast/chicken goujons and peas

Ds10 ears noodles and chicken or a ham sandwich most days.

Husband eats soup and a sandwich. I eat salad most of the time.

Toasties
Quesadilla (which we now make in our toastie/pannini maker)
Pasta pesto
Pasta with a quick tomato sauce- frozen diced onion, spoon of lazy garlic, some dried oregano, tin of toms all blitzed. I tin does 2 meals for the 2 children.
Pitta pizza- tom purée then whatever on top and I buy ready grated mozzarella for the children to put on top.
Baked potatoes
Nachos- when I make chilli (veggie or meat) I always freeze some leftover and then later with those cheap nacho crisps and grated cheese. If I have salsa and chillis I shove those on too

Lockdown 3 lunches have been omelettes. With a variety of fillings

inquietant · 09/01/2021 07:14

In first lockdown we made lunch but it got to be a bit of a burden so this time everyone makes packed lunch and we eat together if we can.

My kids are older so make their own lunch and for us the normal before school routines being followed seems to suit them.

Jackets cooked in the slow cooker, with cheese and beans.

Sandwich, crackers/ rice cakes and fruit.

Ready meal (HM and shop bought), Mac and cheese, spag Bol, chilli and rice, enchiladas, tostadas/wraps.

Beans / cheese / pasta / ravioli and toast.

Soup and rolls.

Hot dogs.

Left overs from the night before.

Mincepiesallyearround · 09/01/2021 07:15

We make a lot of quesadilla with a veggie sauce (like a pasta sauce) and grated cheese. I always put out raw veg choice like cherry tomatoes or cucumber or sugar snap peas and carrots etc. Sometimes tomato soup and a bagel etc.

Impatientwino · 09/01/2021 07:17

Toasties
Sandwiches
flatbreads, houmous and raw veggies
Boiled eggs, salad, bread and butter
Soup - they moan about this though Hmm
Pancakes Smile mine love breakfast for lunch so we do this once a week
Fish finger wraps
Small omelette and salad veggies
Tuna melts/sandwiches for smaller DS
Homemade sausage rolls - occupies them!
Fridge tapas - last day before shopping delivery is everything left on a plate!

cheeseisthebest · 09/01/2021 07:20

Beans on toast
Soup
Toasted sandwiches
Quesadillas yesterday!

Mally2020 · 09/01/2021 07:22

I stayed at my family home for a while, I have significantly younger siblings and I made English breakfasts, premium sandwiches, pasta , snacks etc.

cheeseisthebest · 09/01/2021 07:22

Oh yes wraps with chicken, cheese, salad

Mally2020 · 09/01/2021 07:24

ie tortellini , toasties, jackets oven baked etc

redfernsydney · 09/01/2021 07:26

mostly ham wraps with veggies or eggy bread topped with banana and a little honey, or sometimes bacon rolls

TwoHundredThousandTimes · 09/01/2021 07:28

also quesadillas!

My DCs like thinly sliced hotdogs in them also.

TwoHundredThousandTimes · 09/01/2021 07:30

My DCs have a cooked lunch at school with a cooked pudding as well. So I have been trying to have a smaller hot meal for lunch. Soup and cheese toasties went down a storm as well.

Sceptre86 · 09/01/2021 07:39

Cheese sandwiches, soup, waffles and fish fingers, omlette, scrambled egg, cheese on toast, beans on toast, pasta, etc. I usually give them some chopped veg or fruit on the side.

devildeepbluesea · 09/01/2021 07:42

Sandwiches, scrambled egg on toast, soup (tinned and homemade), leftovers. Nothing exciting really.

SnugglySnerd · 09/01/2021 07:45

I've been making a lot of soup which we have with crusty bread. Also wraps, sometimes with hummus and falafel or sometimes with fish fingers, toastie, jacket potatoes, frittata or leftovers. Always a selection of crudites on the side which go down well.

TwoHundredThousandTimes · 09/01/2021 07:48

Oh and yesterday i had some leftover vol-au vent cases from Christmas so made a cheese and ham sauce and we had vol au vents. I am thinking of doing this with pancakes today.

VaTeLaverLesMains · 09/01/2021 07:49

My dd 16 has been practicing cooking for herself at lunch. She does noodle stir fry, egg fried rice, fry up egg/bacon, carbonara, waffles. The 'students' stuck at home do similar. We all eat home made soup a lot, bread, cheese. Also left overs from evening meals which are in takeaway containers in fridge or freezer.
I think it's helping everyone to learn how to use up what's available, like ready steady cookGrin

I make a big effort for evening meals as it's the main event of the day in this situation. Trying to keep everyone around the table for a good length of time for a proper catch up.

DiscontentedWoman · 09/01/2021 07:49

Quesadillas going down a storm here. Noodles are another favourite.
