How ridiculous is that? Or am I being stupid?

The dot to indicate a recurring decimal is on the Year 6 curriculum. At our school we teach it in term one, but your boy might not have come across it yet.

My top Maths group love that 1 = 0.9 recurring thing!

NerdyBird · 08/01/2021 14:47

We were definitely taught about the dot meaning recurring. I can't remember quite when, but probably secondary. I think we would have the decimal as 0.66 with the dot on the second 6 the way we were taught (late 80s/early 90s).

@BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze

Since when was it a dot? When I was at school we had to write a tiny little r next to the number for recurring. And I'm under 30

Are you sure you aren’t getting confused with an r for remainder?

Maths clearly isn't my strong point Grin

I haven’t done maths for yonks but I don’t remember the dot being right above the number like that. It used to be positioned slightly after like when you do the symbols for squared or cubed. So that problem would have confused me too OP.

That’s not even taking into account that I would have had to Google the answer.Grin

now they seem to put a dot on each, if there's two, or a dot on the start and end if there are more than two

That's how I was taught in the 80s.
