Rice cooker. Do I need one?

A boring one, sorry.
If you have a rice cooker, is it any good? How long does it take? Is it easy to use? Does it stick to the pot? (I can get distracted cooking rice and occasionally it’ll stick to the pan).
Thanks Smile

We have the Tefal 8 in 1 rice cooker and love it, it has a timer and keep warm function so I can put on earlier in the day and not have to think about it anymore. It makes very good rice, which is something I certainly wouldn't manage in the hob while juggling 3 DC and cooking dinner.

About as much as I need to read this thread

Kinsters · 08/01/2021 06:36

We have one and use it every day. The rice is much nicer than I can make in a pan and it's so handy that it keeps warm in there so if we unexpectedly have to delay dinner it doesn't affect the rice. I woudn't make rice in a plastic jug/cooker, I'd be worried about microplastics.

Yes so worth it, bought a really cheap one, lasted 5 years and recently replaced it. Takes 15mins, just add rice, water turn on. It then keeps it warm until you're ready to serve it. Most authentic tasting rice in my opinion but then I can't stand boiled rice.

OhWhyNot · 08/01/2021 06:47

I have a microwave rice cooker makes perfect rice

I used have an electric one prefer the microwave rice cooker (less faff takes up less space) that can also be used to cook vegetables

boatyardblues · 08/01/2021 06:52

We eat a lot of sushi/sticky rice. I previouusly used the 10+10 hob method a PP described upthread, but now have the Yumasia Sakura (available here ) It makes fantastic rice and I find the ‘keep warm’ function useful too.

Whatwouldscullydo · 08/01/2021 06:59

I've been debating this too. I had a friend when I was at school and being Arabic there was never a meal without rice. And id be practically forced fed whilst there Grin

I dont know how they did it but its the best rice I've ever had and I've never been able to re create it in a pan. I miss that rice. And have always wondered if I bought a rice cooker like they had id be able to have it again.

I have a bit if a gadget addiction though Blush i already have 2 slow cookers a waffle maker a kitchen aid a nutri bullet a coffee machine a bread maker do I really need a rice cooker...I dunno...

Plus there only 3 of us...

And yet here you are, reading this thread Hmm

Another vote for the Tefal 8-in-1 cooker. Makes amazing pilau rice. Of course you can do the same in a pan on the hob but with a rice cooker, you throw everything in, switch it on and that’s it, leaving you to focus on making the curry or whatever.

No setting and re-setting timers, it’s all done for you.

evilharpy · 08/01/2021 07:07

We used to have an electric one from Asda which made perfect rice but the element burnt out. I found a Pampered Chef microwave one in a charity shop and it's brilliant.

I can make perfect rice in a pan (it's the simplest thing in the world) but it's one less thing to take up space on the hob.

Whatwouldscullydo · 08/01/2021 07:10

Do u still add the oil/salt?

boatyardblues · 08/01/2021 07:10

It’s worth checking your microwave model, as some say steamers should not be used in them (same for baby bottle microwave sterilisers).

Weenurse · 08/01/2021 07:11

I use my microwave, I do have a rice cooker, but don’t use it as it sticks

LemonSquirtInTheEyeOfLife · 08/01/2021 07:13

I absolutely love mine. Would replace in a heartbeat if it broke.

addictedtotheflats · 08/01/2021 07:13

We use ours 4-5 times a week. I would instantly replace it if it broke. Cup of rice cup of water, add seasoning and veg and go. Done in 20 minutes

picklemewalnuts · 08/01/2021 07:16

No. I had one which was good, but the inner pot teflon comes off really fast and you keep needing new inner pots. I replaced it with an instant pot as the inner is stainless steel.

However, it's really much easier to use a jug in the microwave. Rice in, water in til it looks almost 50:50 rice water layer. Microwave 10mins. Let it sit a while. Perfect. Jug rinses clean easily, no crunchy rice layer. Fab.

Todayisanewday75 · 08/01/2021 07:18

I had a cheap one that made pretty good rice but spat water all over the kitchen and didn’t switch itself off. I now have a Yum Asia one which is amazing. It was expensive but it makes amazing rice, especially sticky rice. I use it several times a week so definitely worth it. Takes about 40 minutes.

FamilyOfAliens · 08/01/2021 07:25

@Whatwouldscullydo

I add salt but only add oil if I don’t want sticky rice (which I normally do as I cook mostly jasmine rice).
Yamaya · 08/01/2021 07:25

We love ours. But get a good one- an asian one. Just put 2 cups of rice in, fill water up to the line, click on and perfect rice in about 40 minutes. Make sure you leave it to steam for about 10 minutes after it says its done. Never sticks, always perfect and you can get on with other cooking without worrying about it. Depends how much rice you eat though. It takes up counter space so if you rarely eat rice it's probably not worth it but we eat rice 3/4 times a week.

This is the one we have. I know it's expensive but it's worth it. Can do different types of rice, and congee. This and my instapot I couldn't live without Grin

Nancylovesthecock · 08/01/2021 07:29

Boil in the bag. Your welcome.

RisingSunn · 08/01/2021 07:30

Couldn’t be without mine.

willowstar · 08/01/2021 07:33

I have a German one off Amazon.. reisunger I think. It has made a huge difference. Perfect rice every time.

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 08/01/2021 07:33

We have a Zojirushi rice cooker which is invaluable and I would replace it instantly. Not so much because I can’t cook rice, but because I can sling everything in and just let it get on with it - it requires zero attention.

ColouringPencils · 08/01/2021 07:41

My method is similar to another poster and works every time

  • Measure out one mug of basmati rice (serves four)
  • Rinse rice
  • Boil kettle
  • Add 1 mug rice and 2 mugs boiling water to pan
  • Turn hob on highest setting until pan is at a RAPID boil (not just simmering)
  • Turn heat off. Put a clean tea towel between pan and lid.
  • Leave for 10 mins or until you need it.
supadupapupascupa · 08/01/2021 07:45

Microwave steamer. rice in, cover with water, cook 5 mins, stir, cook 4 mins done
For basmati
