Help me like quorn

Ohug · 07/01/2021 08:08

I think about what it is too much, isn't it some sort of fungus? It puts me off 😬

I love the crispy nuggets too, and have never had any problems with any of the other products.

I tend to use the dried soya mince instead of Quorn mince though. It's better value and I can make bigger batches at a time when I'm batch cooking chilli, bolognese etc. I buy it in Holland and Barratt.

tabulahrasa · 07/01/2021 08:54

I’m fine with it... but I mean, you don’t have to eat it...lol.

Supermarket branded vegetarian mince is usually soya if that helps.

TopBants · 07/01/2021 08:57

I'm surprised so many have problems eating it. I'd have thought it would have made the news at some point- has no one tweeted the company about it?

I have chucked it in pastas, chilli and cottage pie and it's been fine. Quick and easy and the toddler doesn't seem to have issues with it either. Mushrooms are fungi 🤷.

No need to eat it if you don't want to though. You can use lentils- I do a red lentil chilli that the toddler likes. The Bernard Matthews veggie sausages are lovely and hold together well in a casserole or toad in the hole. There are many alternatives out there, you don't have to use Quorn. I avoid soy products though because of their environmental impact.

Dawnlassie · 07/01/2021 08:59

Had quorn mince one. Had to chuck it in the bin.

CremeEggThief · 07/01/2021 08:59

If you're not vegetarian, you could try mixing meat mince with Quorn or soya mince, or red or green lentils.

I'm not that keen on a lot of Quorn, but in real life, I don't know anyone who is intolerant to it, and lots of my non-vegetarian friends and family members like it and eat a fair bit of it.

Dawnlassie · 07/01/2021 08:59

Only reason I got it was during the first lockdown and there was no normal mince. Now I know why nobody else bothered.

Urgh, you can tell the baby kept me up all night! I meant Richmond (and they do, sadly, contain soya. Call it a guilty pleasure.)

IHaveBrilloHair · 07/01/2021 09:03

@Winterlites.
It seems to be a lot of people who are intolerant.
The OP can make up her mind whether to try it or not, but giving a warning isn't a bad thing especially if she's serving it to a child.

starfish88 · 07/01/2021 09:05

It is a product with a higher risk of allergies like eggs and peanuts. I can't see why it would be their fault though any more than if you complained to snickers because peanuts give you anaphylaxis.

Saying that, you could try beyond meat products, frys or any of the soya based alternatives and see if you prefer those.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 07/01/2021 09:05

@Ohug

I want a cheapish alternative to mince beef as we seem to be eating lots of it at the moment due to a fussy toddler!
I found a recipe which uses half the amount of mince (ish) but you add a tin of green lentils to it

My family have no idea they are eating lentils

So that could save a bit of money

squishee · 07/01/2021 09:06

Quorn was co-launched by Industrial Chemical Industries (ICI). Yum.

StillGoingToWork · 07/01/2021 09:08

It's grim. Try beans and pulses or mushrooms to fill out meals instead.

My parents are veggie. They love a grilled portobello mushroom burger, topped with cheese, sauces, pickles etc. We also make a mean bean chilli for them. They eat quorn at home but it makes us barf.

notacooldad · 07/01/2021 09:08

I used the pieces a lot around 20 years ago and then stopped. Recently I had the nuggets and they are great with a sweet chili dip or mayo.
I had a quorn roast for Sunday dinner last week which I enjoyed. It was a change from a nut roast although I have to say mine are rather good!😂
I've started using quorn mince again. It is good with strong flavours.
I don't use quorn regularly but it is good to have in the freezer to make a meal.

Surely it should contain an allergy warning on all packaging then, as nuts and eggs do? (Or does it and I just haven't noticed?)
Skyliner001 · 07/01/2021 09:12

I love it!

CorianderBee · 07/01/2021 09:13

I don't get the fuss it's just mold, like blue cheese

becca3210 · 07/01/2021 09:14

Let the quorn cook slowly in a nice veg stock and seasoned with herbs. If not for a child - adding red wine can be nice to add richness to a bolognaise.

HereIAmOnceAgain · 07/01/2021 09:19

I'd use brown lentils in place of mince. Can buy canned if you want to throw a meal together quickly.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/01/2021 09:21

I really liked quorn in bolognese or chilli... but it gave me stomach cramps.
The white quorn 'fillets' or pieces don't seem to.

Adding lentils to mince dishes is a good idea. DM used to keep a jar of red lentils and pearl barley and add a cupful or so to mince.

Taylrse · 07/01/2021 09:21

I love quorn mince. Not as keen on the other products.

My mum can't eat it though. It gives her bad stomach cramps. I googled about it because I thought she was being dramatic Grin but it's an actual problem some people get with it!

Hoppinggreen · 07/01/2021 09:23

My DD is vegetarian and allergic to Quorn so we never use it
It’s completely unnecessary. You can manage without meat substitutes but if you do want one there are plenty of soy based ones

MardyBicardi · 07/01/2021 09:23

I have tried and failed to like it too. It’s the polystyrene texture that I can’t deal with.
I go for beans, lentils etc for protein.
We aren’t vegetarian but have been trying to cut down on meat for ages so happy to have any ideas from knowledgable MNers.

Happynewtier · 07/01/2021 09:24

We use green lentils for Bolognese/shepherds pie etc. Takes a bit longer to cook it all, bit it's really good. You can also try very very finely chopping/grating some veggie burgers, to make a "mince". We've done this with the Linda McCartney ones, beyond burgers (pricey but amazing!) and naked burgers, just cook them like normal, I fry them in a pan with a little oil, remove from pan, finely chop, then chuck them back in and add your veg/sauce/herbs etc, makes it taste really authentic.
Not opposed to Quorn, we like their "chicken" products, but haven't found a mince substitute that we enjoy, so mainly stick to lentils, or the chopped burger method!

00100001 · 07/01/2021 09:25

Of course Quorn has listed allergens...why wouldn't it? Confused

FamilyOfAliens · 07/01/2021 09:25

Me too with the dried soya mince.

I always have a bag in the cupboard and used to send DD off to uni with one too.

It has slightly less of a bite to it than frozen soya mince but it’s an excellent substitute.

Almost all the big supermarkets sell their own brand of frozen soya mince now.
