Is this breathlessness?

Just wondering if someone can help before I add to the NHS workload.

I've woken up today very aware of my breathing. I don't feel like my chest is tight and I can take deep breaths, no pain. Just very aware of my breathing despite having work to concentrate on. I'm trying not to think about it. Maybe the closest I can explain is maybe it feels like not enough air going in through regular breathing. Not ill in any other sense but trying not to think about it as it's causing me to panic.
Thanks!

Could you describe the sensation as “air hunger?” Like you want to take
More air in? Do you keep wanting to yawn or sigh a deep sigh?

Doing the breathing exercises I'm finding it easier to do the breathing out but breathing in it feels like I need to rush to get the air back in and slightly difficult to hold. Will keep persisting

My eldest son experiences this and it was due to severe anxiety. He takes sertraline and it went away.

Puddingypops · 06/01/2021 13:29

Sweetie, are you getting any signs of hyperventilation? Any tingling etc in fingers or toes? And do you have air hunger? I think you might be over breathing.

We have something called the bohr effect, if you over breathe your blood cells hang onto the oxygen and don’t release it to your body, this is why during hyperventilation you get confused and pins and needles etc. You can hyperventilate without being in a panic or it being obvious, it just means over breathe, so you could be chronically over breathing and therefore your cells are not releasing enough oxygen and therefore you get air hunger. A vicious circle. Breath all the way out, then force more air out, you are probably hyperinflating your king, then when you can’t breathe out anymore blow a candle out, then take a small breath in and blow all the air out again. You need to build up carbon dioxide so your blood cells release the oxygen. So after your lungs are fully deflated. Breathe normally but don’t allow yourself to take deep sighs, if your body tries to yawn, keep your mouth closed. I’ve had this on and off several times x

@Puddingypops thank you.
Not been feeling this air hunger just more of a bit more effort to breathe and maybe more quicker of breathing out. I've been doing the breathing exercise as much as I can tolerate and done some things to distract. It feels somewhat better at the moment so I'm going to try and have some lunch.

@TheDiceWoman1

Can speak absolutely fine just very aware of my breathing.
Apologies, I asked that question then didn't come back till now.

If you were breathless then talking would be difficult.

So I'd say it's related to your anxiety, which means it's not physiological real even though it feels like it is. That's really tough to cope with.

TheDiceWoman1 · 07/01/2021 20:43

No problem! It definitely eased off by the end of the day and has not been an issue at all today which is really weird. The worst thing was not knowing why I was anxious so couldn't try to reassure myself!
