Is it 12th night tonight?

I always took the 5th to be 12th night, assuming the 25th Dec to be the first day if Christmas. Someone has just told me that they think it is the 6th, which I thought was something different, ie Epiphany.
I'm poised to take down decorations, but now worried I've got the wrong day!

It's 5th and tomorrow is the Epiphany - bad luck will hound if you get it wrong!

jessstan1 · 05/01/2021 17:44

Yes it is 12th night tonight.

It won't make the slightest difference when you take down your decorations, that is mere superstition and means nothing.

That's a relief, thanks. I'll get on with removing the somewhat dessicated tree now Smile

I think it depends when you consider the first day of Christmas to start. Protestants are more likely to count the 1st day of Christmas as Christmas Eve whereas Catholics claim it's Christmas Day with the twelve days ending on 6th January (Epiphany). I always take the decorations down on the 6th but a sibling takes them down on the 5th. So I think either works!

ShaunaTheSheep · 05/01/2021 17:48

It’s tomorrow.

InTheSnow · 05/01/2021 17:50

Could you not take half of them down today and the other half tomorrow.

Then you may only suffer "not nice luck" rather than "bad luck2?

DramaAlpaca · 05/01/2021 17:50

It's today.

I don't mind about the rest of the decorations but I insist on the real tree being out of the house before midnight on 5th January. No idea why!

happymummy12345 · 05/01/2021 17:53

For me it's always been the 6th.

MonkeyPuddle · 05/01/2021 17:54

Our tree is still up. Because DP, in his infinite twattishness, has managed to lose the new tree storage bag that I ordered, has reordered one and it was supposed to arrive today and it hasn’t.
Our tree is staying up until I have something to put it in, as we had to bin the box as DP (can you spot the theme here) managed to let it get rained on.

MrsT1405 · 05/01/2021 17:55

Yep, 12 th night. All kicking off down here in Catalonia for the arrival of the 3 kings. Bigger than Christmas.

cashmerecardigans · 05/01/2021 18:15

@InTheSnow love the idea of half and half Grin. Tree definitely will be going out tonight as it has not fared too well. Seriously considering an artificial one next year instead.

Both trees (we have a real one in one room and an artificial one in another) are now down, along with all the other decorations apart from the lights. I'm going to leave them up for a few more days as they cheer me up.

Those of you who celebrate Epiphany, it sounds great fun. Enjoy!

grassisjeweled · 05/01/2021 23:32

Are we supposed to do anything in particular?

FreezerBird · 05/01/2021 23:34

Yes, twelfth night tonight, Epiphany tomorrow. I am sitting enjoying the Christmas decorations and lights for the last evening, will clear most of it away tomorrow morning but some will stay until Candlemas.

AdaColeman · 05/01/2021 23:37

Leave your lights up until Candlemas (2nd February) to add cheerfulness to January!

scrivette · 05/01/2021 23:57

I suggested to DH we leave the tree up until 2nd Feb, he couldn't be convinced!

I always leave my decorations up until 12th night (tonight) and take them down on 6th.
