Hi can some one help me find a shampoo for my 4 year old. He hates his hair washed so nothing that will sting his eyes and make it worse. But he keeps getting eczema by his eyes and head made worse by shampoo. I’ve tried Johnson’s, sanex, and dove and the cheaper Tesco and Asda brands. He has very sensitive skin. Any help I would appreciate . Thank you in advance

Aveeno skin relief shampoo (Dark blue lid). Not cheap, I'm afraid but works wonders. Can get it from Boots online (if in the UK). I buy them when on sale.

You can mix it with water too to make it last longer and it still works.

I would also add to stop using conditioner, if you do. It exacerbates the issue.

TheSpottedZebra · 05/01/2021 14:14

It might be a case of trying a few and trying to isolate what ingredients he's sensitive to.

Have you tried the Child's Farm range?

Buzlightyear1 · 05/01/2021 14:17

Hi no if not tried either of those . Thank you Both I don’t mind spending the money . I didn’t know that about conditioner so thank you. I have been using a all in one shampoo lately. So will definitely stop that to. Thank you so much

Does he need shampoo?
My kids rarely used shampoo as young kids. And by rarely, I mean less than once a month. We just used water - for bodies and hair - unless something more was required.
The less soap we used - on clothing and bodies, the better their skin was. And if we did use soap/shampoo it had to be rinsed off exceedingly well.

Child with very dry, itchy, scurfy scalp was cured with an Aveeno shampoo, got on Amazon l think

We use this La Roche Posay baby wash and it is very gentle on dry, eczema-prone skin. It foams easily so only a tiny amount is needed. It’s expensive but one bottle has lasted us 18 months and we’re still only a third of the way through it. www.boots.com/la-roche-rosay-lipikar-syndet-baby-body-hair-wash-200ml-10256674

Another vote for child's farm.

Both ds and myself get eczema and it it's wonderful stuff. Smells quite nice too (if a bit sweet). We both use it and haven't had a head /neck /face flare up since starting with it. They do a decent three in one version too which is good for swimming

farawayplanet · 05/01/2021 14:34

Healpsorin body wash can be used to shampoo the hair. It's designed for extremely sensitive skin and those with psoriasis and eczema. I found it to be very good with no irritation or anything.

Vinorosso74 · 05/01/2021 14:41

Strangely, we found the John Frieda blonde range good. DD used to get eczema on her shoulders and back of her neck along with underneath her eyes and shampoos seemed to trigger it. It was purely by accident we discovered this!

Buzlightyear1 · 05/01/2021 14:58

Thank you all so much. I will definitely try some of theses . I feel so bad when he gets , he loves to play with mud and dirt so definitely need to wash😂 I really appreciate all the suggestions and will try to see what will work. Mums net is fantastic for these kind of things 😁

We used to use Dermol 500(?) for DD, the same as she had in the bath.
Eventually we switched to L'Oreal kids.

sueelleker · 05/01/2021 16:23

Coal tar shampoo used to be prescribed for children with eczema.

Silentnight87 · 05/01/2021 16:29

Try and avoid soap if possible. You can always try to wash/lather with a bit of oil if slightly dirty. Otherwise use the above as recommended.

Vanillaradio · 05/01/2021 16:29

When ds's excema was terrible (up to age 5ish) we used dermol 500 for all washing including hair as everything else set off a reaction. We are now able to use the Childs Farm shampoo without a flare up, still can't use conditioner.

ponygirlcurtis · 05/01/2021 16:29

I use Child's Farm too, although for a long time used nothing.

Vanillaradio · 05/01/2021 16:30

I'd also recommend putting dermol 600 in the bath water, this was really good for ds.

lentilsforlunch · 05/01/2021 16:41

Child's farm.

We use waitrose one they do a bubble bath and a combined shampoo/cond.

Suggest you test any new shampoos on yourself to see if stings.

lentilsforlunch · 05/01/2021 16:43

To clarify, I meant try it by normal use obviously! I used a really posh organic brand on my dd for weeks before I used it one day and discovered it was quite stingy

abersinas · 05/01/2021 16:48

When our child's eczema was at its worst we only used emollients for washing, no soap or shampoo at all.

Tryingtoreadmore · 05/01/2021 16:48

Dermot 600 in the bath is working well for us. My older girl can use child's farm now too, it is lovely and not too expensive.

Namechangedforthisoct2 · 05/01/2021 16:50

Halos n Horns used to be amazing for this, but sadly it got pulled

Jetatyeovilaerodrome · 05/01/2021 16:51

Child's Farm is the only thing I have ever used on my kids that both felt like it was getting them clean, and didn't aggravate their skin.

AnnaMagnani · 05/01/2021 16:55

All the one's you have mentioned in your original post contain SLS despite pretending to be sensitive skin brands.

I became v bitter about this when I had ezcema and was a supreme expert at label reading.

You need an SLS free product and with children that will usually be labelled ezcema friendly - there's Child's Farm, E45, Earth Friendly Baby and a few others.

Or you can just use his emollient to wash with while his skin is really bad.

ChocolateSantaisthebestkind · 05/01/2021 17:02

We all use Childs Farm in this house, they have an adult range too!

PandemicAtTheDisco · 05/01/2021 17:06

We had a goats milk solid shampoo bar that worked really well. It was from the soapy goat and is £5.50 from ebay. There is an apple cider vinegar one that works well too.
