Escapist recommendations for those in need

Could we have a thread of escapist films, books, TV programmes etc.?

I'd love to be recommended something that takes me away from my grey corner of London which is beginning to feel quite repressive.

I can recommend;

Films:

  • In Bruges - two hitmen in Bruges, except one of them wants to do some sightseeing. I really enjoyed this despite thinking it wouldn't be for me.
  • Roman Holiday - Audrey Hepburn. Enough said.
  • Paris Je T'aime - mixed French/ English film showcasing a short film related to the theme of love. Each film takes place in a different arrondissement. The final film, Carole from Denver, always makes me cry.
  • Midnight in Paris - a lighthearted but not over cliched journey of self discovery.

TV Programmes:

  • Flavourful Origins (Netflix) - short episodes highlighting rural cooking in three provinces in China. Maybe not one to watch if you're a bit squeamish, but I think the videography is beautiful.
  • The Hairy Bikers Mediterranean Adventure (iPlayer) - a great cooking show that made me feel very inspired and liberated.
  • Rick Stein Secret France (iPlayer) and Far Eastern Odyssey (iPlayer) - I find Rick a bit annoying as he declares everything delicious before it has time to hit his tongue, but he does go to some interesting places that are off the beaten track.
  • Japan with Sue Perkins (iPlayer). The second episode in the countryside was my favourite. I had a dream about becoming a free diver for shellfish. Absolutely Sueperb.

Books:
I'm a bit stuck, although I have been reading a wonderful book about the wines of the world, which I have found fantastically relaxing and educational at the same time. I will dig it out and find the title if anyone is interested.

Has anyone got any suggestions they could share?

I've just recommended "The Dust Bowl" mini series by Ken Burns
on another thread .
Absolutely gripping .Fascinating detail like a New York?Chicago firm tendering to lay concrete over the whole area to stabilise it ,grain companies adding flower prints to sacks because they were aware that struggling families were re using to make clothes .

Thanks Peridito that sounds very interesting. Such cruel policies and lack of care to individuals.
