Should I have “goals” for 2021? Do you have goals?

This time of year seems to lend itself to a lot of naval gazing which I’m not sure is necessarily healthy. Everyone on social media seems to be talking about their “goals” and vision boards but no one seems to actually define them?
If you are happy with your career, home, partner, children, friendship groups, what goals do you have?
I don’t know if I’m just an aimless person but I seem to float from one year to the next with very little change. Is this a bad thing?

If being aimless makes you fulfilled then you have no need for goals. Nor is it a bad thing if you are floating happily from one year to the next. In fact I rather admire you.

I find setting modest goals helps me ensure that I lead a slightly more fulfilled life. I try and read a book a fortnight as I love reading. I try and swim three times a week as I enjoy swimming. If I didn't set these goals, I would read little and swim less.

I love goals because I’m not happy with aspects of my life.
If you’re happy then you carry on Smile

Nope, no goals here. Wafting around, making it up as I go along is about as good as it gets.

Every year when I belonged to a gym there were loads of people who joined with the aim of being fitter in January. Most never seen by March.

Perhaps if you do have them, pick one and stick to it, or promise for a defined period of time such as with dry January.

JMAngel1 · 04/01/2021 12:49

I suppose I don't see fitness as a goal - I do Pilates 5x week and that's normal. Ditto I love reading at bedtime.
I think I'm too pragmatic - yes I like my home but it could be bigger and more wow but I don't see that as an achievable goal.
I could do with a new car but I would rather have more disposable income to have a nice life month in month out than drive a fancy car.

Lots of people are striving for more and theres nothing wrong with that. It's okay to be happy as you are to.

My goal is to finish my studies by june and get started in a new career

Frownette · 04/01/2021 12:55

It's a nice idea having goals but they tend to tail off after a while anyway.

If you're happy as you are, that's great.

AHippoNamedBooBooButt · 04/01/2021 13:01

I love a goal. I love having something to work towards and look forward too. My goals usually require learning something new though like this year my goal is to make myself clothing, instead of automatically hitting primark when I want a new dress or jumper. I also have a goal of saving up enough money to go on a luxury holiday, another to read more this year then I did last year. Goals can be good if they are goals that allow you to grow as a person. Life is short, I’d hate to waste a year learning absolutely nothing new as there is so much to learn and see in the world.

Tidier house. Lots of things coming together to indicate that is what I should be doing.
Had started anyway in Dec, so carrying on. I will join the thread about it on MN at some point.

freakyfairy · 04/01/2021 13:05

Yep....my goal is to save save save and get my house build started 🙌can't wait!

JMAngel1 · 04/01/2021 13:26

Wow, a house build. That is exciting.
I suppose I do have goals but just don’t think of them as such - e.g I’m learning Italian via Duolingo but it feels like fun. I’m also doing a post grad course for work which tbh is boring the crap out of me but there is a lot of work still to do. It’s not going to get me a new job or anything so I hadn’t thought of it as a goal.

I don't have goals as I'm someone who prefers to waft around.

I do like daily habits though. Current ones I am trying to focus on are...
Walking
Keeping the house tidy
Not buying crap
Using what we have
Selling/giving away things we no longer need

Applying to uni so will be adding reading to that list shortly.

Cindy87 · 04/01/2021 14:15

At the moment, I have a daily goal of just getting through. I'm hoping things will start getting easier - at which point I'm sure my goals will become more ambitious! Saving money will be a focus for this year.

StillMedusa · 04/01/2021 14:22

I have minor goals... drink less wine (I'm realistic that I won't give it up..I like it!) keep improving my guitar playing, walk at least 10000 steps a day... that sort of thing. I don't set targets as such although I do like to learn a new piece of music every month, or relearn ones I've forgotten!

Last year I focused on not spending unnecessarily (Lockdown helped) and I shall continue with that!

CloudPop · 04/01/2021 14:23

My goal is to get 2021 over and done with. Can't wait for it to end

billy1966 · 04/01/2021 15:28

Get through it with the family happy and in good health.

Have decided to do the mother of all clear outs of my wardrobes.

Too much storage for too much.
This year I am going to ruthlessly go through it.🤞🙏
