Do you ever have suppressed thoughts involuntarily come to mind just before sleep?

Sorry if this is a bit of a weird one!

I find that just before I fall asleep, in that limbo state between wake and sleep, some thoughts that I must suppress throughout the day/when in full consciousness involuntarily flit through my mind and drive me MAD!

Such as:

"God, I'm so unhappy with my weight. I've really let myself down!"

"DP is losing his hair and I'm actually quite sad about it."

Does anyone else get this? Sometimes I lie awake for ages with these thoughts going round in my head!

All the bloody time, I can be absolutely knackered but I guarantee that as soon as my head hits the pillow my mind starts whirring!

Sometimes they're quite mundane ones like the ones mentioned above. Other times they're something that I didn't even think about during the day!

Yup that's me. I'm exhausted right now but scrolling through the internet until I fall asleep to stop thoughts whirring. My brain is constantly in overthinking mood

Go yes, absolutely. Usually it is around decisions I have made (and am now regretting, or second guessing). Things that I can think rationally about during the day but obsess over at night. I find it is worse at certain points in my cycle, and I think is a perimenopause thing as I haven't always had this problem.

Yes about my dad who died last year. It's awful. I have to listen to YouTube videos to fall asleep.

That's a time when your subconscious is strong. It's supposed to be helpful to use positive thoughts at that time. So consistently replace the 'God I'm unhappy with my weight' with 'I'm going to eat healthily this month' and see what happens.

Not thoughts but I have some weird "visions" just before I fall asleep.

vanillandhoney · 04/01/2021 07:43

Definitely.

I've downloaded some apps that help with guided meditation and they seem to help me focus on other things.

Mine is a symptom of anxiety though.

Not so much when I’m about to fall asleep but if I wake up in the night, yes!

Pisteachios · 04/01/2021 08:03

Yes 100%

I actually dread going to bed at the moment. Last two nights I’ve laid away for 3 hours worrying. About current stuff but also about stuff I have no hope of fixing. My brain cannot switch off.

I use audible. Set to turn itself off after 30 mins (or 45 mins if I’m feeling restless) on a low volume listening to an audio book I already know well. I also do it again if I wake in the night. It’s changed my life!
