Keeping children’s toys for hypothetical grandchildren

My mum kept a lot of mine and my sibling’s childhood toys and books (Playmobil, Polly Pockets etc.). I love the nostalgia of looking back at the books in particular as it evokes lovely memories of reading with my mum.

Do you intend to keep any of your children’s toys / books for any future grandchildren you may have?

My mum kept most of our toys and books. They've now been put away again (and added to) for the next generation.

nimbuscloud · 03/01/2021 13:01

Lego, Brio, sylvanian family, my little pony and Schleich animals all safely in attic. Lots of Lego and all of the Schleich toys are from my own childhood

nimbuscloud · 03/01/2021 13:03

My mother in law has grandchildren ranging in age from 26 to 3 and her own children’s toys are regularly played with in her kitchen
Fisher Price garage and big yellow teapot are particular favourites of the smaller people

We have old action men, transformers, Tracey island, lovely old pop up books, dolls house

CottonSock · 03/01/2021 13:08

My mum didn't save a single thing. Not sure I will. Maybe Lego.
Dh family are hoarders and kept every toy.

modgepodge · 03/01/2021 13:09

Both my parents and parents in law have done this. It’s great as we don’t have to take as many toys with us when we go visit, and the novelty of new toys is exciting! My dad has mainly big things like a rocking horse, brick trolly etc thst were out the way in the garage. PIL have all sorts - duplo, train set, marble run and a whole library of books!

Beamur · 03/01/2021 13:15

I have kept some favourite things. DH still has his special childhood toy, luckily it's very robust and has been played with by many many children now.

planningaheadtoday · 03/01/2021 13:16

Yes, I sorted all our loft toys out during lockdown last time.

I have a box of sylvanian
A box of duplio
Big box of Lego
Box of nicer board games.
Box of barbie with babies
Box of Schleich horses and a stable.

Sadly the beautiful wooden brio trains were given away by my husband.

My mum did this and played with all her grandchildren with toys from my childhood. I think it's lovely.

CinnamonStar · 03/01/2021 13:17

My parents kept most toys- some live at their house, some at ours, some at niece and nephews.

My grandparents did the same, so I grew up with plenty of 1950s toys and books and games, and most of them are still going strong with the third generation.

Floralnomad · 03/01/2021 13:21

We’ve kept a few toys ,but not for future GC just because we have a sentimental attachment to them , we also had books but gave all those to a great niece / nephew a couple of years ago . Amongst what we have is a rocking zebra , push along dog , a ride on train and track and a shed load of soft toys .

Galvantula · 03/01/2021 13:21

I think we definitely will. DH family didn't keep much at all but my parents seemed to keep everything. The DC love the old Star Wars toys and Lego especially.

One of my DC loved brio and Thomas the tank engine so I'd keep all the wooden track. Also Playmobil and some other stuff.

We have too many toys though Blush

Mine are still young and won't part with much yet.

Anonanon12 · 03/01/2021 13:22

I hadn't planned too but I'm realising how they still sell things that were around from my childhood and still at an expensive price... Lego, duplo, dolls, puzzles etc. So I'm going to box some up and keep them

SoupDragon · 03/01/2021 13:25

I have a "grandmother box" in the loft. Things like Brio, Lego, wooden toys... the favourites. I watched my mum re-buying stuff for her grandchildren and thought it was daft to throw everything out given I had space to keep a good boxful.

AlexaShutUp · 03/01/2021 13:25

We have kept a few things but not loads. I loved watching dd play with some of my old favourites when she was younger, so I think she will want to do the same with her future kids. Haven't kept everything though - I'm sure any future dgc will have plenty of toys of their own!

laoehruak · 03/01/2021 13:30

My parents have loads of space and have kept almost everything. My kids love playing with them now. I'd love to do the same but I don't have the space at the moment so I donate a lot of our old toys to the local baby bank.

Bitbusyattheminute · 03/01/2021 13:32

My mum did. Too much. My kids were briefly amused, then they went back in the loft. I'm tempted to get rid of the whole lot because I know i have hoarding tendencies.

movingonup20 · 03/01/2021 13:33

I'm keeping the Lego, some board games and a baby doll each, basically 2 box loads. Future grandkids won't be short of new stuff

SuperbGorgonzola · 03/01/2021 13:34

Absolutely not. Unless it's something really special, that won't take up too much space.

My MIL kept practically everything and has instilled these hoarding tendencies into my husband as well unfortunately.

My argument is that I pay my mortgage for space to live in, not to give over to cupboards full of tat.

inquietant · 03/01/2021 13:37

I have some nice wooden toddler things and some special books which I'll keep but I can't wait to get rid of the plastic like Lego.

I also personally hated when people dumped ancient stuff on me so I won't do that!

HNY2021 · 03/01/2021 13:39

My mother kept some of mine and over the years my cousins have played with it and now my children do.

I’ll keep some for any visiting children to the house and then possible grandchildren Grin

saraclara · 03/01/2021 13:40

I have a few key FP toddler toys, Duplo, Lego, Playmobil and Sylvanians in my loft. Plus a dolls pram.

My granddaughter is now just a year old, so the FP stuff is down. I love that she adores the Shapes and Slides bears as much as her mum and her auntie did!

elQuintoConyo · 03/01/2021 13:40

I have a few things from my childhood, but we moved a LOT and stuff got chucked left right and centre.

DS has enjoyed playing with my weebles playground set, MLPs, pull along happy dog, Pound Puppy, medieval Playmobil with horses.

Nothing of DHs has survived childhood, again lots of moves plus he's got 5 siblings and a lot of stuff broke.

For future possible GC, I've saved the MLP and Weebles. From now: Lego and Playmobil will be saved and some books. DS' wooden train track was from IKEA and has gone to a friend's LO, ditto some boardgames. Plus the Lidl wooden marble run and the giant plastic monstrosity marble run we got last month, DS has grown out of such stuff, sadly.

We don't have an awful lot of space for keeping stuff, plus when DS moves out (ages away, he's only 9yo!), we'll downsize.

My DF is one of 9, my GPs had two dollhouses and a stack of toys under their stairs, kept us entertained for days in the once-a-year visit. Many many happy memories.

Thighdentitycrisis · 03/01/2021 13:40

Ds has all his Lego, I’ve kept the Brio set and a few other bits. I only kept a favourite soft toy from my childhood

PattyPan · 03/01/2021 13:40

I played with my mum’s dolls and my dad’s Lego as a child and my parents kept a lot of my toys too. I think it’s a great idea especially for things like Lego and dolls houses which are very durable but also expensive to buy new. Good for the environment too.

ComDummings · 03/01/2021 13:42

Only really mega blocks, Lego and brio I think
