Does anyone know if both parents have to be keyworkers to get a school place?

I'm a key worker, DH is not. My boss says I have to use key worker provision. DH is on calls all day so he can't actually supervise/home school kids even though he WFH and he can't be furloughed. Can school say no to our request for a place? The gov website doesn't specify as far as I can see!

No they don't,not in my area anyway

I think different schools have different rules for this. At DS's school only one parent has to be a key worker.

Different rules in different areas, but in ours, your manager (NHS) can request a place for your children in a situation like yours.

During first lockdown the government guidance was that only one parent had to be a key worker but our school insisted that both parents had to be key workers. It was ridiculous. My friend was an itu nurse working nights then having to deal with her children during the day while her husband was on calls.

I think it depends on the school. It did in the first lockdown anyway. I was like you, a keyworker working outside the home, 2 primary school aged DC, a DH who worked from home in a job that means he can't help the DC with any school work (when I go to work in school holidays or when they are self-isolating as school covid contacts DC watch tv or play mine craft all day). Our DC went to school on days that I worked (2 or 3 random days each week) and the school didn't say we both needed to be keyworkers, but I know from reading threads on here that many other parents could not access keyworker provision in this situation.

It will depend on your local guidelines. Also, lots of other people who aren't keyworkers have the same problems - trying to WFH and manage homeschooling, so it makes sense that children with 2 KW parents (who ideally are working outside the home) get the provision.

Last lockdown our primary school only needed one key worker parent.

Secondary school haven't specified, but my year 7 will be in every day.

Discuss with you kids school, I am sure it will be fine.

FoxinaScarf · 02/01/2021 22:29

Depends on the area. Different schools have different rules.

The whole idea is that the minimum number of children are at school.

PinkShimmerSparkle · 02/01/2021 22:58

It depends on demand in our area, my DD is in yr7 and I have secured a keyworker space for her as I am a TA and DH goes out to work every day but he isn’t a keyworker and he can’t work from home.
At my school, it is only 1 parent has to be a keyworker as demand for spaces is very low but at my friends school demand is very high so both parents have to be keyworkers, they also have to provide evidence from the work that they need a space. So check with your DC school.
