It helped my DC get to sleep. I told him it would, so not sure if it's psychosomatic!
I did buy one with a fleece cover, as touch is one of his things, and the standard cotton cover wouldn't have been acceptable.
I can barely shake it out, and got a single size, rather than double which I'm glad I did as doubt I could lift it.

Lemonpiano · 02/01/2021 21:26

I use a normal blanket folded so I have weight on some of me but don't feel trapped. I have a low tolerance for any hint of being trapped or any real weight on me though.

Yeh, that would terrify me not soothe me!

Yes. Worth every penny! But make sure you know what you are buying. It should be roughly 10% of your body weight and you aren't meant to share it, so a single size is better. A lot of them don't have removable covers and/or are weird sizes so buying covers for them isn't easy.
Mines a 'gravity blanket' and is standard single size so I can just pop a normal duvet cover on when the branded one is in the wash.
I don't use any other sheets/ blankets with mine as I run hot. I don't feel trapped, I feel safe.

2 of my dc have autistic traits and I read that a weighted blanket would help calm them down for sleep. I bought one to try, one dc refused to have it anywhere near them And said they couldn’t move under it and felt trapped. The other loves it and sleeps under it all night. They still manage to move A LOT Under it, I have to sort the fitted sheet out every morning, but they do settle quicker under it than they used to.

It didn’t come with a cover, so I made one for it, but it’s so heavy it doesn’t stay in it very well, but I felt it needed something as there is no way I could put it in the washing machine.

MazDazzle · 02/01/2021 21:30

I bought a really expensive one, yet still the beads all gather together and puddle at the sides IYSWIM.

Comforting, but no better than a regular heavy blanket for a fraction of the price.

IrisAtwood · 02/01/2021 21:32

I love my weighted blanket and sleep much better since I bought it last January.

Londonnight · 02/01/2021 21:34

I bought one in September as my sleep is dreadful. It took about a week to get used to the weight of it. I tried for 3 months to get used to it. I found even turning over in bed was a problem due to the weight of the blanket [ 7.5 kg].

They are VERY heavy, and very difficult to change the cover due to the weight.
For me it didn't make any difference to my sleep. I have now gone back to my duvet as it is more comfortable and feel I have wasted a lot of money on the weighted blanket which I no longer use.

Cattitudes · 02/01/2021 21:35

I think it really varies from person to person. We got one at Christmas. Half the household love it, the other half hate it.

Spottysausagedogs · 02/01/2021 21:39

Yes yes a thousand times yes! Very underrated, helped me through some terrible temporary anxiety related sleep issues. Seriously went from being awake till the (late) early hours, fretting terribly in tears, to sleeping soundly within minutes. The problems still existed but I could face them that bit better on a good nights sleep. I seriously don't know how they're not more popular! Mine is now on standby, waiting for menopause no doubt! I got it from amazon for about £40. I just used to lay it out on top of my duvet and I didn't feel overheated at all, may just be me though. Good luck hope you find it as useful as I did Flowers

Hailtomyteeth · 02/01/2021 21:42

Dd treated me to one for Christmas. It was so heavy I couldn't move it, and woke up contorted and in pain every morning. After a week, I gave up. She's taken it back to use as a throw. It's a lovely thing but way too heavy for me. It didn't make me sleep well or feel better.

Floralnomad · 02/01/2021 21:43

We got one for our adult daughter who has CFS ( quite badly) and anxiety ( about everything) , we got one that was the recommended weight for her weight and she lasted about 2 minutes before she had a panic attack about it suffocating her . I’m not sure if the CFS made a difference as she lacks oomph iyswim . That said I sold it on eBay for only a little less than I paid so it was worth a try .

RumJerrySailorRum · 02/01/2021 22:12

I have a gravity blanket.
Absolutely bloody love it.

I got a huge one and it's on the spare bed. Only I sleep under it, although both my niece and nephew have when they've stayed over.

I don't actually move in bed much once I'm asleep so I don't feel trapped. I'm claustrophobic but I just feel safe.

I sleep loads better, but I also leave the radio on all night when I sleep alone which has always helped me.

I don't use it every night, just every few nights.

Rainbowandscarlett · 02/01/2021 22:46

I nagged my partner to buy me one for Christmas
I love it-only it’s too hot halfway through the night so I do end up kicking it off
Helps me get to sleep much faster and I do feel more refreshed in the morning

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 02/01/2021 22:52

I dont have a diagnosis but suspect I have asd. I tried my son's and woke up feeling refreshed for the first time ever in life. I cant tell you what a difference it has made to my quality of life.

wibblewombat · 02/01/2021 22:57

I have an adhd dx.

I got an 8kg one as I'm not the lightest but have since got a 6kg one with washable cover. The latter is better and it does have a relaxing effect on me.

ThatsnotMyNameAgain · 03/01/2021 11:51

thank you so much!
i turn and turn and turn in bed, so there is a reasonable chance i ll feel trapped.

I ll look for the single ones first as DH hates the idea of extra covers...

I just got one for Christmas. I have a tendency to feel suffocated and trapped so I was worried about feeling like that with the blanket but I don’t!

It has definitely helped me sleep. I fall to sleep easily but wake up many times a night. In the week since having the blanket I have woke up once, maybe twice, a night which is a massive improvement. Whether this is directly because of the blanket or because I thought the blanket would help I don’t know but I don’t care because the result is what I wanted!

I find it hard to lift and was worried that it would feel too heavy once it was on top of my but I don’t notice it feeling overly heavy at all.

ThatsnotMyNameAgain · 03/01/2021 14:38

so just a flat sheet and the blanket?
Are you warm enough?
