When will we need to move?

DP and I have been together 6 years and bought our first home almost 3 years ago - currently no children.
Due to it's size (2 bed terrace, definitely a starter home), the idea had always been to stay here until we needed more space, likely by having a 2nd child.

I am now in a different job, which means I work from home. This is likely to continue for the foreseeable and is not just a COVID workaround. We have set up a little office in the corner of the second bedroom and still have the space for a double bed (not pushed up against the wall).

However, now we're starting to think about TTC, I'm wondering how long working from that room will be viable for?

From my (limited) understanding, baby will be in with us for at least 6 months but what then? Would we still be able to use a small corner of that room as an office during the day or will baby need sole use of that room from the start?

I guess I'm just trying to get an idea of when we might have to start thinking about moving, instead of doing it in a mad rush when we realise our current set up no longer works.

Move when you can afford it. Babies are often sleeping in their parents room for much longer than six months. Don't worry about it now, you are not even pregnant yet!

Well presumably once you are back working again baby will be in childcare during working hours so the room would be free during the day. However once they do move in and are mobile (maybe from about 9 months) you will have to make sure the room is safe which means no trailing cables, no heavy objects such as printers and box files where they could be pulled off shelves by a pulling up baby.

Can the home somehow be extended to provide working space, or as one of my colleagues has done, use a shed with heating etc?

@jessstan1

absolutely fair. I am just a notorious over planner and like an idea of timescales i.e when hypothetical child is x.

We could probably afford to move now quite comfortably but don't really want to at the minute.

Have thought about that. We do have a conservatory which is just a home gym at the minute but the temperature is either way too hot or way too cold. Have discussed knocking it down and putting a proper extension on but not sure whether the money/time outlay is worth it in the long run when we don't plan to be here forever.

Think in terms of about two years from now. Then try to forget it until nearer the time.

I wouldn't sweat it.

Currently have three children in a 3 bed - teen in the mid sized room and 6 year old in the worlds tiniest box room, room only for a bed and a clothes rail! Luckily we have a conservatory (but with two sides brick so with heating It's fine), which is the playroom for all the toys.

Baby is in our room, but we co sleep so no cot taking up room. Dh also has his desk in our room as he works from home full time (even before covid). The baby just sleeps downstairs during the day.

My other two co slept until they were 3/4 so were in no hurry to sort rooms or rent somewhere bigger.
