I don't understand Reddit!

I'm sorry, I know that sounds ridiculous but I just find it so confusing! Please would some kind person explain it to me in simple terms?

I used to find it confusing. It's basically like this...there are loads of "Subs" on there...different Subreddits.

Think of each one like a separate group for people who are interested in that subject. Each sub begins with an r/ so...

r/vintage

r/australia

r/cars

Etc. Then there's r/askreddit which is popular...and others which are also famous.

People go on the subs and read the posts and reply to them...and have conversations. Or they can post their own post...and have people respond to that.

You can thumbs up posts. Or give awards...which you have to pay for.

Each sub has it's own rules...usually on the sidebar. Does that clear it up?

FortunesFave · 02/01/2021 13:29

Some subs are gross...and full of disgusting shite. Others are very nice, friendly places. It depends on your interests. It's good for true crime stuff..and mysteries. Also if you have very niche interests.

BeautifulandWilfulandDead · 02/01/2021 13:33

You join the individual subs and then the posts for those subs come up in your feed. If you don't want to see them any more, leave the sub.

Readitch · 02/01/2021 13:37

Thank you so much both of you Flowers

I tried but found it unwieldy and couldn't get on with it.

Readitch · 02/01/2021 14:00

Is there a page on there equivalent to the mn talk page with a list of all the forums?

OP posts:
RosieGirl27 · 02/01/2021 14:18

@Readitch no you gave to search what you are looking for. R/AmITheAsshole and R/Relationships are very entertaining to read.

I struggled to get on with Reddit until downloaded the app. I searched for things I’m interested in and joined the subreddits for them.
So those things appear more in my main feed. I can get lost in Reddit for ages sometimes just reading random threads!

BeautifulandWilfulandDead · 02/01/2021 14:52

Yes, the app is very good.

Burnthurst187 · 02/01/2021 14:55

There's a hell of a lot on reddit that I don't get, think it's mainly due to not being American.

No, as there is way too many subreddits to list, hundreds of thousands, some active, some dead. But on popular or the all tab once you have signed up you can see some of the most popular ones.
SausagePourHomme · 02/01/2021 15:21

anyone can start a subreddit about anything. As a result there is a subreddit for any interest you can think of. I like:

r/loseit - very supportive weightloss discussion
r/britishproblems - funny, very british humour
r/egaladviceUK
r/todayilearned
r/sewingpatterns

any TV show, band, movie you can think of of has a board that someone has started. just search reddit + (something you're interested in) and you'll find the boards that would appeal to you.

SausagePourHomme · 02/01/2021 15:22

*r/legaladviceUK

Winterfellismyhome · 02/01/2021 15:29

I like

r/casualuk
r/crossstitch
r/choosingbeggars
r/crafts
r/antiMLM

BeautifulandWilfulandDead · 02/01/2021 15:34

Cute animals aplenty in r/eyebleach (do avoid the similarly named r/eyeblech unless you want to be scarred for life!). If you are into fantasy fiction, r/fantasy is a great place to find recommendations.

TheListeners · 02/01/2021 15:38

I am still getting to grips with Reddit. The subreddits really are so random. Yesterday I discovered r/pocketpussy and r/dogsonshrooms

NekoShiro · 02/01/2021 15:55

Reddit works so much better as an app, I dispose the Reddit website so my contribution is to suggest you just try it on a phone or tablet, a lot easier to navigate and see the content, you can view every subreddit without an account but will need one to take part in conversations or subscribe to reddits, there is a main front page as well that is everything that is currently 'hot' or trending somehow, I tend to just check this whenever I want a time killer

haba · 02/01/2021 15:55

The prepping board is quite fun, if you want your eyes opened. I just find Reddit very unwieldy on my phone.

citycitycity · 02/01/2021 16:25

I didn't understand reddit at first but it's on elf my favourite sites now because it can easily be tailored to your own interests. You join the subs you like and these appear in your feed (or you can look at each sub individually). I sometimes scroll through popular to discover new subs. The newsfeed is a bit more America centric. To add to the subs mentioned above (many of which I also follow) I like:

r/waterfalls
r/askuk
r/badwomensanatomy
r/coolguides
r/explainlikeimfive
r/facepalm
r/murderedbywords
r/oldschoolcool
r/startledcats

Amongst many, many others!

Gncq · 02/01/2021 16:28

Ooh if you like spooky r/NoSleep is fantastic!

emilyfrost · 02/01/2021 16:29

@Readitch

There are 138,000 active subreddits, so no, there isn’t a list of them all somewhere.
Readitch · 02/01/2021 16:30

Thank you all for the further info, will have a good look around it all later :)

I love r/whatsthatbook; being an avid bookworm, I really like telling people what titles they're looking for.

LongIslandIcedT · 02/01/2021 18:32

I use bacon reader app for Reddit, it makes it similar to MN for reading and searching.
