Stewart Lee et al sniping venomous jealousy towards Michael McIntyre over the past 10 years is a slightly silly thing that really upsets me. Please tell me yours.

I really don't get the hatred for Michael. His niche is (mainly) family-friendly rather than crude or blue. He's never claimed to be another Frankie Boyle or JImmy Carr.

He always comes across as a very nice man, not arrogant at all (we saw him live before he got big and was very gracious then). He laughs along with people rather than trying to belittle and embarrass them.

I like him very much.

Stewart Lee's brand of comedy seems to be based on his undoubted intellect, but I can't recall ever actually laughing at anything he's said. He does sneering very well.

Maybe he has a 'post-humourous' mindset which ironically dictates that, if people laugh at comedy, it must therefore not be funny.

This is the thing, why should art such as comedy be looked down upon just because it's not high brow oh-but-I'm-clearly-superior-to-my peers to gauge an identity with its audience

I'm always morbidly fascinated by the hate Mrs Brown's Boys gets. It isn't my cup of tea, but I know plenty of people who love it. Each to their own.

Yet many people who dislike like it seem to be personally offended by its existence. Why can't they just not watch it if they don't like it? Confused

CoolCatTaco · 02/01/2021 00:04

I'm not a comedy snob but I detest Michael McIntyre. Obviously just my personal opinion & we all like different things etc...but I find him painfully smug, hackneyed & insincere. And not funny.

I dont get the hatred for Michel MacIntyre (sp?) either. I really can't bear Mrs Brown's Boys, but dont take personal offence if someone else does.

I really like Michael McIntyre. He just seems like a nice bloke and he makes me laugh! I’m not a comedy snob at all, I like all sorts, but I also cannot stand Mrs Brown’s Boys - no problem with others liking it whatsoever but it’s the one show that I literally cannot understand how people find funny. Most comedy I can see why others like it even if I don’t particularly, but I just cannot get my head around anyone finding it funny!

I once offended someone by saying people who watch Ant and Dec’s Saturday night takeaway are the kind of people who like to do gangnam style at a wedding, but it’s basically comedy for these type of people. Ie inoffensive, bit “cheeky”, sort of tell it like it is types.

Mrs brown’s boys is awful and I genuinely can’t understand why anyone would think it remotely funny

nosswith · 02/01/2021 07:37

@DieHardIsAXmasMovie I draw a difference between not to my taste and not funny when it comes to comedy, and indeed some other things such as music.

As for Michael McIntyre, I think he should return to pure stand-up comedy where his act is unique, instead of average game and variety shows.

DieHardIsAXmasMovie · 02/01/2021 09:23

@nosswith

I don't find Mrs Brown's Boys funny either, but I accept that other people do. Given its success, it clearly is funny to lots of people.
