What do you spend on your family holiday?

In the hope that Covid retreats I've been browsing holiday ideas. Having muttered "How much?!" at the cost some 7 day holidays I'm wondering how much others spend on a family holiday as a multiple of their monthly income?

Do I need to loosen my purse strings or just accept that I'm a miser / a swankier holiday is just not sufficient a priority for me at the moment?

A month's net salary seems a lot to spend on 1 week.

Thank you

For three of us, abroad we've spent from 500quid to almost 2k. Obviously totally different holidays but all enjoyable. Depends what you want / whether you're willing to take kids out of school / a million other things!

Could easily spend more than 2k if we could afford it but realistically I can't justify it.

Blackdog19 · 01/01/2021 18:52

Would happily spend a months net salary. Probably do, spread over a couple of holidays.

Northernsoullover · 01/01/2021 18:54

Usually around 1500. I've done all inclusive and villa hire + flights. There are 3 of us.

No idea what to do with holidays this year. I've been eyeing up cheap flights to Rhodes in June but don't feel like you can commit

It epends on the type of holiday. Two weeks in a hotel or apartment in the sun somewhere in Europe we would probably look to spend roughly £500pp room only. Double that for all inc.

We've spent £6-£7k on Orlando holidays. 2 weeks in a villa with theme park tickets.

We've also spent £500-£1000 for a week in a caravan in the uk, depending on the time of year.

timeforawine · 01/01/2021 19:00

For 3 of us our 2 European holidays cost c£2k each
Our long haul holiday costs between £4-£7k
Annual budget is usually £10-11k
We do have a good income and save a lot each month, don't do many meals out, shopping etc, holidays are what we love

AliceMcK · 01/01/2021 19:01

Last holiday was about £400 family of 5 for a week plus spends and extra activities, maybe an extra £250.

18 months before that it was £2k (youngest under 2) for a week, all inclusive (first week of the season so not a sort after date) plus hotel night before flight, airport parking & spends. Probably clots to £3k by the time we had finished, which is why I insisted on a very cheap holiday next time.

peppapigyoghurt · 01/01/2021 19:06

Probably 2/3k

Thanks for the replies

I will definitely be delaying any decision on destination / accommodation until the Covid situation becomes clearer.

Not sure I fancy even a short haul flight in Covid times.

I had a quick look at package deals and they look expensive at the moment. Plus no one will be amazed if some of the holiday companies go bust. I'm holding on for now.

We have young adult DC and up until
this year because our family holiday was cancelled due to COVID we spend 13-15k on our family holiday which is about 1.5 months pay. We normally go on a stay and cruise holiday and go on lots of trips and try new experiences etc.

dealornodealer · 01/01/2021 19:27

Abroad for a week during school holidays costs us about 3k all inclusive plus say £2-600 spending money depending on sights we want to see/meals out/water sports or £2000 flights+b&b/self catering plus £1000-1500 spending. Family of 4, 2 adults, 2 primary dc.

See that’s similar salary level to me but the idea of spending that on a holiday blows my mind. I’m really tight about it and I’m not sure why really! I’d just always chose to add to savings or something. We normally spend about 2k but I feel maybe I should unclench about this.

Tier10 · 01/01/2021 19:33

I know it’s a lot but that’s our thing. We have three other holidays a year too as a couple.

CarlottaValdez · 01/01/2021 19:37

I promise I’m not judging you, as I said I think I’m too tense about it!

SendHelp30 · 01/01/2021 19:40

Usually anywhere between £3-5k but I don’t take my DD out of school and holidays are more expensive during school holidays

Turnedouttoes · 01/01/2021 19:42

We don’t have children yet but I would guess at £400 each on a couple of short city breaks each year plus one 10 day all inclusive summer holidays which is usually about £1500 each.

However, I am very fussy about holidays and will only go to places with excellent reviews plus due to DPs job we always have to travel in school holidays which is a massive pain.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 01/01/2021 19:43

We probably spend just under a month's net salary on holidays each year but we have adult children so its just the two of us.

However all 4 of us are hoping to go to America next year to see relatives and we will pay for the DC - one is a student and the other is in a low-paid job. Flights alone will be more than a months income.

JaninaDuszejko · 01/01/2021 19:43

We spend ~5% of our annual income on holidays each year so less than a months take home pay. We have a high income though.

About a months salary is a good rule for budgeting. Last family holiday was 12k on a cruise, me and DH plus the kids. It was during the school holidays so more expensive however there was more families on board which I prefer.

Turnedouttoes · 01/01/2021 19:46

We’ve booked a holiday already for next year but I only did it because BA are offering free cancellation/changes up to a few weeks before and when we needed to cancel 2 trips with them last summer they were excellent and refunded us immediately.
I think I’d probably hold off booking with anyone else.

Chickenwing · 01/01/2021 19:47

I would spend about 80% of my monthly salary per 1 week of holiday. (Including spending money)
