Shingles!

Gilead · 31/12/2020 22:50

I have sodding shingles for the third time this year! Any recommendations for a bit of respite from the burning/itching?
I have Acyclovir tablets and cream.
Thanks!

Nothing worse!!! I had oat baths (oats in a sock ran under the tap) was still in agony but it did seem to help with the healing!!!

JacobReesMogadishu · 31/12/2020 22:54

Wow. Are they looking at why you’re getting it so,often as that’s quite unusual? Dd had shingles twice and they ran tests as they were worried about her immune system.

Calamine lotion? Baths?

Gilead · 31/12/2020 22:56

JacobReesMogadishu it’s due to my delightful immune system destroying drugs for colitis!

Ask the GP for Pregabalin to help with the pain and tingling

Gilead · 31/12/2020 22:58

Yummymummy2020 I may try as a poultice. I don’t have a bath but I have a shower stool and as it’s on my bum cheek it may be worth a go!

Sympathies :( the only thing that works for me is ice packs.

Recruit2020 · 31/12/2020 22:59

Manuka honey was great. Complete sticky mess but worked a treat. Wrapped in clingfilm x

Bloodhoundgang · 31/12/2020 23:12

Ask your GP for Versatis. Lidocaine patches. They are licensed for neuropathic pain from Shingles.
Hope you feel ok. I empathise with the poor immune system from UC😢

Turnedouttoes · 31/12/2020 23:21

I’ve had it twice this year OP and it was awful, I was totally covered in it. There were times in the night where I’d honestly have shot myself if someone had handed me a gun, the pain was that bad!
Eventually I completely broke down in the pharmacy as I was in so much pain and the lovely pharmacist gave me cocodamol and ibuprofen to alternate as often as possible. It was the only thing that worked for me.
And sleep as much as you possibly can Flowers

Gilead · 31/12/2020 23:24

Thank you folks and sincere sympathies to those who’ve had it, it’s no damn fun. I have codeine, hopefully it’ll knock me out too!

Aloe Vera gel worked great for me.

gildalilly · 31/12/2020 23:34

My mum has just had shingles and she was told to take an antihistamine to alleviate the itching. She used germaline on the spots which stopped the itching too.

BashfulClam · 31/12/2020 23:41

Calamine works well. Lush used to do a calamine soap which helped a lot .

alpinia · 31/12/2020 23:52

Am a repeat sufferer of shingles too. Besides stuffing yourself full of horse sized acyclovir tablets..
Strongly recommend one of the medical grade manuka honey wound gels. I had mine on prescription. Takes a lot of the sting and itch out, at least of the skin surface.

Other wise a shingrix vaccine!

Gilead · 01/01/2021 00:22

You lot are great! I found some germolene in the cupboard and have taken a tramadol so may get some sleep, thank you!

I will ask about the vaccine but not sure I can with biologics.

Try and get the shingrix vaccine.

Hope you get well soon.

My 20 year old son has shingles and I have Covid...happy new year!! He is taking acyclovir and is coping ok .

You may pass on chicken pox from shingles so be careful with children around you. It may be possible to take a preventative medicine continuously.

EvelynBeatrice · 01/01/2021 10:14

You could see if there is any chance of getting the shingles vaccination on the NHS. I know that it’s usually only offered to 79 year olds but there might be exceptions. If you have the means, it’s also possible to get this vaccination privately in some places in the U.K. Have a google. Likewise it is far more freely available as a vaccination on the continent- so that’s a future option when travel opens up again.

70 year olds I mean!
