Investing for beginners

I’m going to start investing in stocks and shares but I don’t want to invest in companies that aren’t ethical. DP has got stocks in Chinese companies that U.K. dubious about and I really want to make sure I’m confident about the companies I invest in. Is there a ‘best’ way of going about something like this?

If you have no idea what you are doing definitely don't pick individual stocks but go for something like a stocks and shares ISA and you will be able to search for ethical funds.

I do have a vague idea, and am following some YouTube accounts as well. DP is doing it very well atm and is happy to advise too, I just don’t necessarily agree with his company choices, even if they’re doing him very well so far GrinGrin

Some companies have pre selected portfolios that you can invest in, I have a stocks and shares ISA and invested in the aj bell ethical fund.

I have found that if its long term investment and leave it sitting for a few years i make more money from funds

Shares wise I usually go for brands that I use and engage with but I am not a stockbroker!

Second what @CountryLady1 said. If you're knew then buying an ethical fund is the best route. However, everyone's idea of ethical is different. For example one of the ethical funds I invest in has Coca-Cola as part of the portfolio. I don't consider them to be ethical, they create sugary drinks that causes obesity IMO, plus the waste off the back of their plastic bottles.

Anyway my point is - invest a little bit , research and then decide what to invest in but for now go with a fund, look at which companies are in the fund and decide from there,

Otherwise just buy stocks in a brand you believe in and start from there

It depends on what type of investing to want to do. I like long term investments and generally do blue chip companies and cross referencing the ethicalness of them.
Tbh there aren’t loads of options. I’ve also line with an ethical funds like pp mentioned. I don’t find the brands partially ethical but I think with more and more people investing in then it will reach a tipping point.

I’m not looking to make a quick buck, I’m definitely looking for long term.

i have a stocks & shares ISA with Nutmeg who are a good online provider. They have an Ethical option which excludes things like oil & gas companies.

for a first-time investor, you should definitely go for a general tracker rather than buying shares in individual companies.
