Unwanted Christmas presents for sale on EBay

I can kind of understand why people sell stuff they received, but won’t use or wrong size etc.
I tend to look for things for sale at this time of year because it’s my sisters birthday at the end of January, so can sometimes pick up a perfume she likes quite cheap.
I have noticed this year that there are more people listing 4/5 unwanted wrapped presents with no clue as to what’s in them other than they are suitable for man/ women / boy / girl etc....and a lot of people are bidding on them.
So my question is, Would you? Have you? Was it worth what you paid? Any nice or nasty surprises?

But people could just wrap up any old crap 😮

Justnotfeelingit · 31/12/2020 12:29

I’d imagine the sellers have wrapped some worthless old shit up to try and make a quick profit.

Bluewavescrashing · 31/12/2020 12:30

You'd be pretty stupid to bid on a wrapped present but I saw the same thing on ebay yesterday! Could just be a cardboard box inside and no comeback from the seller.

They aren't real though, op. These were never gifts lol. They are a money making scan because people like to gamble and think they're about to be sent a good item...it will be junk from the pound shop!

I'm pretty sure that's exactly what these sellers are doing. This has been a thing for years.
Horehound · 31/12/2020 12:30

Scam*

SnuggyBuggy · 31/12/2020 12:31

A fool and his money are soon parted

canigooutyet · 31/12/2020 12:33

It's a bit like lucky dip.
There used to be a website years ago that sold a Box of Crap for £13.
I had some amazing stuff in them.

Iwantmychairback · 31/12/2020 12:55

Yes, I agree that it’s most likely tat from the pound shop wrapped up in Christmas paper. But there are bids on quite a few listings, so someone somewhere is taking a gamble.
Just want to hear from anyone, like @canigooutyet who has risked a few pounds.
Not something I would do, I work too hard for my money!

It will be Bayliss & Harding/Avon/Poundshop crappy toiletries.

canigooutyet · 31/12/2020 13:05

Oi I work hard for my money as well!! Grin

One of my dc's birthdays is coming up, tempted to go and have a look. Depending on how much, description and feedback might get one. If I do I will report back.

dontgobaconmyheart · 31/12/2020 13:06

I do think you always see this. I have absolutely no interest in it but don't like to mock or sneer over it really. The possibility that someone might be buying them in hopes of something good when it's presumably a big con is sad, but it's even more upsetting to imagine someone buying that kind of thing just wanted to open some wrapped surprised as they were alone and received none.

Ditto legitimate opened gifts that are unwanted, if someone needs the money they do what they need to do. I can't be bothered go start judging and would not be offended if a family member or friend did this.

canigooutyet · 31/12/2020 13:12

Although they would have made for some interesting Secret Santa gifts under the guise of doing something different and supporting local business.

DelphineWalsh · 31/12/2020 13:14

I'd be amazed if it was anything more than an empty box in wrapping paper.

Pinkflipflop85 · 31/12/2020 13:15

There was a big trend for this a while back on YouTube. Vloggers ordering them and doing unboxing videos.

Geepee71 · 31/12/2020 13:17

I 'think' you have to now have to give more info in the listing on ebay, to try and avoid people being totally ripped off.

I'm sure I've seen adverts for a surprise present website, which looks legit and interesting.

canigooutyet · 31/12/2020 14:13

So far I have found ones that give you an idea of what could be in there, such as it feels like, aimed at a specific age/sex, and from sellers with lots of positive feedback as a seller.
And a lot are for less than a tenner including p&p.

They are now also appealing to me as stocking fillers. If mine were younger I would also be tempted to get one of the as an alternative to giving out books.

Tellmelies65 · 31/12/2020 14:24

Yes I’ve noticed this and I’ve also noticed a load of wrapped gifts. I posted a thread about it the other day.

MrsGulDukat · 31/12/2020 14:33

I'm actually watching a few just to see what money they go for. Some are at £30 currently.

MrsGulDukat · 31/12/2020 14:37

I've also noticed there are multiple lots from the same seller and same wrapping paper.
