Cows Milk Protein Allergy in a 7yo - just diagnosed

My 7yo has just been tentatively diagnosed with cows milk protein allergy. She has been eliminating all dairy for a few weeks now and is well again, but I dont really know anything about this. and anything I can find after a quick google relates to babies - I guess it is less common to be diagnosed at such an age.

does anyone have any idea of the implications, differences of what she can eat compared with lactose intolerance, and anything else I need to know. We are awaiting a dietitian appointment.

Thanks

Oh good grief YES hospital!diaries are deadly dull (WTAH headache diaries, I don’t know, I felt like my brain was trying to kill me until it wasn’t; no idea how long for due to the aforementioned MURDER BRAIN...) but dietitians seemingly live for food diaries. If you’re used to doing a continence-related one, any information you can get about your DD’s bowel habits will also be useful.

It is much easier now to find “accidentally vegan” things (I think Soreen have just started doing lunchbox mini cake-loaf things, for example) but A Conversation about how she’ll not always be able to have the same is going to be really important for all of them. Her siblings need to be able to have treats that are treats For Them (as long as it won’t put her at risk) - but they need to not be mean about it. You don’t have to get into a huge thing, but 7 isn’t too wee to start understanding that being fair isn’t always about giving everyone exactly the same thing. One to work on slowly & you’ve plenty else to be keeping you busy I know, but hopefully it’ll help your stress levels as well.

I’m guessing birthday sweets etc aren’t such a thing just now, but a swap box in the house is something lots of parents find invaluable - anything Unsafe received from a classmate/in a partybag (remember those) can be be swapped when you get home treats you keep a cache of. (Because not everyone will remember. Or “get it”. Or they’ll mix things up.)

Hope the vitamin D helps -NICE have just said everyone should be taking it due to pandemic restrictions & UK geography being a poor combination. They’d been reviewing all the available studies after it was suggested Vitamin D might help prevent Covid-19/lessen severity of disease if contracted/be a possible treatment; & basically they’ve just concluded there’s not yet enough evidence to support those suggestions - it’s quite possible that’ll happen yet; & whether or not it does, we all need a healthy level of vitamin D. (They probably don’t want people overdosing on the stuff either, so as cautious as an interpretation as possible wouldn’t surprise me...)

Made me lol there with the diaries!

Yes I think I will spray them all with vit d when I get it. Been meaning to for ages but now I've got incentive

Swap box is a good plan.

I really should resist the urge to look at my phone first thing, because for a moment my brain flipped very quickly through: some kind of fake-tan type-thing using using vitamin D; application of vitamin D after fashion of teen girls in the late 1990s putting on deodorant after PE (ie whether or not you like Impulse, if you get too close to the changing room door you’ll be wearing it due to the fumes seeping out); use of a [fire] hose; & a squirty-bottle situation as if either i. trying to herd train cats or ii. using a garment-refreshing spray not at all as directed, but as certain populations mostly the male student one seem to think makes perfect sense.
And then I remembered the sublingual spray form of vitamin D is a thing Blush In my defence, Murder Brain does have some long-lasting effects...

Very glad to have been able to be useful; & I hope your DD’s dietitian appointment comes through soon.
