Is £25 a lot for wellies?

I've always brought cheap £10/15 Dunlop (or similar make) wellies but find them very wide and not easy for long walks.

The supermarket 'fashion' wellies often rub, wear out really quickly and don't tend to have any ability to keep warmth in.

I've been coveting a pair of pink wellies I've seen in my local garden centre for ages. They are Briers (or something) and have a thin lining as opposed to just plastic.

They are shaped but still sensible width and shape.

But they are £25. Shock

I need wellies as ankle deep mud here!

Anyone experience of this make or of expensive wellies that aren't from supermarkets - are they worth the money?

That's cheap! And I'm not someone who spends lots on clothes and shoes, but I wear wellies every day and need decent ones. No experience of that make though, I'm afraid.

itsgettingweird · 30/12/2020 23:56

Should add that's sale price. Down from £43 Shock

Thanks. I've never really needed wellies for long walks before (thanks 2020!) - purely playground duty - which my sports direct ones are fine for.

I had a feeling it would be one of those things that's initial outlay quite high but they'd last for quite a long time?

Depends how much you wear them and what for.
If it's once a year when snow is 2 inches high then it might be.

If every day for 4 months a year I'd be getting ones that are comfy and no doubt more expensive.

TokenGinger · 31/12/2020 00:05

As with all things, buy cheap, buy twice. Invest and you'll get a lot of use out of them.

I've got two pairs of Hunter wellies, one I've had for about 8 years, the others 5 years, and they're in excellent condition. Well worth the money.

I just got my mum a pair for Christmas from mandmdirect.com for £42.

They're definitely worth the investment if you'll get a lot of use out of them.

itsgettingweird · 31/12/2020 00:05

I'm wearing them more and more! Even in summer when we walked fields they were needed after rain.

I'd like to keep up walking more even when we are released back into the wilderness so I do think it seems like it's a reasonable price and good investment.

5 and 8 years.

Definitely worth it then. My supermarket ones last a year at most and cost £10!

Right - my coveted pink wellies are being brought tomorrow Grin

Bought Hunters for DD (on her birthday list) and thought them expensive at the time but they have lasted ten years!

CrazyOldBagLady · 31/12/2020 00:08

Sounds quite cheap for a pair of shoes. If you can afford them, and really like them, just treat yourself!

Blimeyoreilly2020 · 31/12/2020 00:10

Agree - that’s cheap for wellies!! If you wear them lots then invest....I wear wellies for 2-3hours a day and a decent warm pair makes ALL the difference when it’s as wet muddy and cold as it is at the mo!!

DanaScully53 · 31/12/2020 00:19

I've had my Aigle parcours varios for about 5 years. Lots of use, best ones I've ever had. Still comfy and do lots of walking in them. They were pricey at £120 but well worth it and with being adjustable and having wide calves they fit perfect whatever sox I wear in them.

StillMedusa · 31/12/2020 00:52

I wear Ariat leather wellies... they cost an obscene amount of money. BUT I wear them every day walking the dog for hours and they were worth every penny!
I'd say £25 is a massive bargain!

Lizzy1980 · 31/12/2020 01:11

That’s a good price for wellies. I got a nice pair from ASOS last year for £20, I wear them all the time for dog walking and they’re wearing incredibly well. For the amount of use they’ve had I’d happily pay three times that amount. I’ve seen some nice Hunter ones but personally I can’t justify spending £100 on a pair of wellies as much as I’d like some. £25 is very reasonable and if recent weather is anything to go by you’ll get your wear out of them

Seadragonusgiganticusmaximus · 31/12/2020 01:17

Those are not expensive wellies.

These are expensive wellies: www.lechameau.com/gb/women-s-chasseur-neoprene-lined-boot.html?s=64833

KenAdams · 31/12/2020 01:22

I thought you'd left a 0 off by mistake and were talking about something like the pink posted above!

But no, £25 definitely isn't expensive.

Shmithecat2 · 31/12/2020 01:26

I have Dubarry Galways. Leather country boots, £320. My current pair have finally given up the ghost after 10 years, so I'll be replacing them like for like. Well worth the cost per wear.

BluebellsGreenbells · 31/12/2020 01:29

Muck boots in the sale are worth the money.

They are warm as they have thick soles and very comfy!

Defiantly better than supermarket non insulated rubbish.

YerAWizardHarry · 31/12/2020 01:30

I have hunters. Bought them at 17 for wearing to festivals, they're still going 10 years later.

itsgettingweird · 31/12/2020 07:41

Wow. Sounds like this pair £25 down from &43 are a bargain!

These will make so much difference. I find if my feet get cold I struggle to warm them up.

Worth getting some with a neoprene lining- much cosier!

actiongirl1978 · 31/12/2020 07:44

Muck boots with neoprene lining I have raynauds and these are absolutely perfect. Mine were 125 last week. I just wore my last pair out after 3 years of endless dog walking (rural so lots of mud and fields)

actiongirl1978 · 31/12/2020 07:44

A fabric lining will do nothing to keep your toes warm.

BikeRunSki · 31/12/2020 07:48

Get them big enough to wear thick socks or fleece liners in!! They might then be too big in the simmer, but you can use an insole then.
I’ve gas’s lot of success with garden centre wellies.

inappropriateraspberry · 31/12/2020 07:50

It all relative isn't it? £25 IS expensive to lots of people. But if they are better quality and will last longer then per wear, they will be worth it
£25 is a lot for wellies to me, because I hardly wear them, but is a cheap price for a pair of good boots, which they are to all intents and purposes.

lljkk · 31/12/2020 07:51

My Hunters cracked and let water in within 2 yrs of purchase. Or maybe within 1st year. DH bought them. I keep them at work for walks outside to save my work shoes.

My B&Q Wellies are still going 12 years later but they only get used in our garden.

My Shoe Zone wellies don't leak in spite of 2 x 2 mile walks in them twice a week for last few months.
