What age did you first let your DC stay up for New Year?

My DC are 8 and 10 and usually go to bed at 8pm. They wake up at 6am no matter what time they go to bed. Thinking of letting them stay up until midnight for NYE for the first time.

Don't think DH and I have stayed up until midnight for NYE since first DC was born!

My 2 boys were only about 4 the first time they stayed up. One is now 8 and the other 13. It's a one off in the year. They have a long lie the next day and are fine.

My have done it from really young because we often stay round my nan's house and we will have a little family party with my mum, aunt and younger cousins. They would play with my cousins and then would often fall asleep on the sofa and be taken up to bed before 12. My eldest son only managed to stay up until midnight last year when he was 6. Tomorrow however without the party atmosphere I will still put my two year to bed usual time and let my eldest stay up a little later to join in with a zoom family quiz we are doing.

7 and 5 but they weren't really up for it till the following year. They were starting to stay up late (say till about 10) on holiday by about that age too.

Dd did last year, just after her 5th birthday

delilahbucket · 30/12/2020 21:03

10, nearly 11. I was amazed he managed it 😂

PodgeBod · 30/12/2020 21:03

Mine are 4 and 5 and I've told them they can stay up this year. Whether they manage it is a different story, but their bedtime routine has really suffered in the holidays so I think they probably will

Barmbraic · 30/12/2020 21:06

We had a trial run with the late late toy show last month (Irish institution) so we'll probably do it this year. Dc are 8&10.

HeadSpin5 · 30/12/2020 21:06

Mine is 8 and this is the first year we’ve allowed it - will see how long they last though!!

BogRollBOGOF · 30/12/2020 21:07

They're 7 & 10 and have done a few now... they're pretty nocturnal anyway.

I was quite happy to ignore it this year but DS1 has just asked about games night and staying up...
Normally we'd go to friends half a mile away and have games/ films.

AragonsGirl · 30/12/2020 21:08

My then 5 year old and 2 year old were up til about 11 last year as we were at friends. The now 6 year old wants to stay up this year so will see how that goes!

FuzzyPenguin · 30/12/2020 21:09

Last year when DS was 5, we went round a friends. He did make it till midnight and had a great time joining in the games.

peacockfeather11 · 30/12/2020 21:10

10

jessstan1 · 30/12/2020 21:10

I think mine was always up, even as a baby, if we were doing anything at home (we didn't always); it's also my birthday. There was never any question of him going to bed if anything was going on, no concessions for being little! It suited us that way, we had a happy child who never woke us at the crack of dawn :-).

PJsEveryday · 30/12/2020 21:11

We never stay up up DS asked to stay up last year (he was 12). I stayed up, we had lots of snacks, watched the telly, shook hands with him at midnight. He said 'is that it?' I said yes. He went straight to bed very nonplussed.

He doesn't want to Stay up this yearGrin

VerbenaGirl · 30/12/2020 21:17

We started having a gathering with two other families when each of our youngest children were 2 and the eldest were 5. Seem to recall the younger ones all dozed off the first year or two, but from then on did stay up until just after midnight. They are 14 / 17 now and we’re still doing it! Although via Zoom this year. It’s become an important tradition and the memories the children all have of it are so great. We always plan a very easy day on New Year’s Day, to work around any tiredness.

Catsneezies · 30/12/2020 21:19

Ha! Maybe we'll make it super boring and they won't want to do it again.

Now that they're not going back to school on Monday it's less important if they're tired and grumpy. Thing is, they'll still both wake up at 6am whatever time they go to bed!

I think she was 4. But she couldn’t tell the time so I changed the clock in the hall and went to bed earlier than midnight. Can’t get away with that now she’s 9.
