Wool vs man-made carpets

Talk to me about your carpets! I would like to get a wool mix 80/20, it's natural, warm, hard wearing and long lasting 15yrs maybe. Apparently better for air quality and in a fire?! However, less easy to remove stains, apparently have to get at them quick, risk of moths.

Dh would prefer a polypropylene or nylon man-made carpet, which would be more stain proof - you can even bleach clean (although why on earth you'd need to!) Downsides are not as long lasting although looking at one that says 10yrs, not natural so made with oils and won't degrade after disposal.

This is to go up the stairs, hallway and 3 bedrooms. Kids aged 3 and 6, ddog who does not really go upstairs and dcat who sleeps up there. We plan to stay in this house at least primary school, may move when we've got huge teenagers.

Really appreciate any voices of experience to inform this costly purchase 🙏

I’ve never had a moth problem and was shocked by all the posters with problems! It may be regional:

Clothes and carpet moths overlap in their diets...

The look is different. More polypropylene does mean more sheen.

I’m also shocked at the number of moth problems - I didn’t know it was even an issue and until I moved into my current place I’d always had wool carpets.

Fascinated by the idea of the wasps.

We bought wool carpets three years ago for all the reasons you've given. Mid priced but supposedly mothproof - now finding threadbare patches where they've been munched Angry

Someone I know had to remove all the textiles from their house - carpets, curtains etc - and keep their clothes in sealed boxes for two years to get rid of a moth infestation.

My wool carpets are only a year old - anyone know what you can do to prevent moths?!

Don’t have heavy furniture that can’t be moved out easily to hoover behind 😟

If it’s got a Woolmark on it you can claim under the guarantee.

If it has a Woolmark it will have been treated with a mothproofing agent.

Have a look at your guarantee and see what it says.

I worked in a carpet shop - with young children I'd recommend polypropylene. It will be much easier to clean and maintain. A decent one these days is not at all shiny, in fact some of them are hard to tell from wool.
Invest in a good polyprop one and it will last. Also get good underlay!
And you never now when you may need to bleach out a stain or two - when a child or pet is sick, or you discover a cup of tea must have spilt under furniture.

@FamilyOfAliens I'm trying to find the receipt!

A year ago I got 100% wool berber for my hall, stairs and landing and a bedroom. I haven't had any problems with moths yet, touch wood.
I really wanted this gorgeous 80/20 carpet because apparently a bit of synthetic wound in makes for a stronger carpet, but it was out of my price range.

I was also told not to put wool in busy areas, so I'm kinda expecting the stairs in particular to wear out soon....but we'll see!

daisypond · 02/01/2021 10:10

Our wool carpets were wrecked within six months by moths. Never again would I have wool.

Hello, friends. I am trying to redesign my apartment. I have total white walls and a hardwood floor. I have an idea to make a colored accent on some bright detail and add something authentic to the interior. That's why I want to find a wool rug to put on the floor. I've already checked eBay and Ikea. Nothing suits my apartment. Where can I buy a beautiful rug that will catch everyone's eyes? I saw some worthy Persian rugs in the DorisLeslieBlau gallery in New York. Do you think those are original rugs?
