Potential dog name

This is academic at this point, as we aren't yet in a position to have a dog. We plan to adopt a rescue when we move into a bigger place - no preference on breeds; we'll happily take whoever needs a home.

As for names, something randomly popped into my head, which I really like: Scabian.

It would suit a big burly breed, and be ironic on a small dog.

DH hates it. He thinks it's ridiculous.

I thought I would put it to the MN jury.

Scabian.

Surname rhymes with Kravitz, if that helps.

Yay or nay?

Eww scabby

FairfaxAikman · 30/12/2020 18:39

Stick to the name it comes with. Coming to a new home is going to be stressful enough for a rescue without a name change to contend with too.

Sorry not for me. But it’s your dog, you can name it anything you want. You probably won’t like my dogs names.

ginandbearit · 30/12/2020 18:42

Haggis..Haggis Kravitz

Redyoyo · 30/12/2020 18:43

I think scabby too its not really a name you could shout.

Suzi888 · 30/12/2020 18:44

Nay, not a fan sorry!

WestSideBoom · 30/12/2020 18:48

I'm on board with Haggis.

Whatthebloodyell · 30/12/2020 18:50

Scabian? Like scabies? Er yuck.

What about benny?

Sheleg · 30/12/2020 18:52

A resounding no, then! Maybe as a middle name, keeping the name he/she comes with.

I work in dog rescue, if it’s a stray or a foreign rescue, then we would just give them a new name and unless it’s been there for a long long time, it won’t know it.
Most people change the name, or change it to something similar sounding.

mommybunny · 30/12/2020 18:56

If you’re going to rescue I totally agree to stick with name the dog already knows when the dog arrives to reduce stress of introduction to new home. It really is that traumatic.

That said, my DH is the sloppiest human you’ve ever met about dogs, and his dog language (something like baby-talk) is constantly throwing in new endearments and variations on those endearments. Our rescue dog does eventually learn that when he uses those words (one of which is “louschka” - which has no resemblance to her actual name 🤷‍♀️) he’s talking about or to her, and her ears prick up and she responds. So you might be able to eventually change the dog’s name to something you prefer, but only when the dog has figured out you’re their forever home and they are safe there. It is a gradual process that can’t be rushed.

Can’t say I’m wild about the name you’ve chosen - it makes me think of dogs with scabs who have had a hard life but good luck with your rescue when it happens.

Soutiner · 30/12/2020 19:12

Fabian is better than Scabian.

Santaisironingwrappingpaper · 30/12/2020 19:15

Kasabian - Kass for nn?

Fastforwardtospring · 30/12/2020 19:18

You need to think of a name you are happy to call out..........I wouldn’t fancy calling out Scabby, which is what will get shortened to.

Monkeytapper · 30/12/2020 19:23

You are better off picking a 2 syllable name. Easier for them to recognise and easy for you to shout out for recall.

Soutiner · 30/12/2020 19:23

Fenton has a nice ring to it.
