Anyone tried heated socks?

coldfeet246 · 30/12/2020 14:47

I am looking to buy some heated socks - wondered if anyone had tried them and had any recommendations. I mean with batteries unless anyone has better suggestions. Have tried socks with highest tog rating and sheepskin insoles. Thank you

Anyone? I know it is not the best timing to ask. Happy New Year.

Ah, I wear heat holders. But, I really recommend leg warmers. I got given a pair (always so cold) and they're a game changer. Worth a try?

EmmanuelleMakro · 01/01/2021 09:13

Ooooh interesting! Sorry OP can’t give recommendations but did not know there was such a thing! I kayak on icy water and in Tier 4we are not allowed to use showers/chnsuimg rooms so am now tempted to invest in some. Lots on Amazon....

Thank you - Yes I wear heat holders at the moment with sheepskin insoles but having to spend several hours a day outside and it is not enough for me. My legs/body are very warm with all my layers but I need warm feet. Anyone actually tried any as the reviews seem very varied even for £200 ones from ski shops?

DH has a battery powered pair for work. He finds the actual battery pack really uncomfortable and only his toes heat up 🤷🏻‍♀️ not the most helpful review!

Soutiner · 01/01/2021 10:46

I wear thermal socks and find they are good and not too thick to wear with my boots.

I also make my own insoles from cardboard which I then place a thin fabric insole over the top, the cardboard offers excellent insulation and are easily made.

I have Raynauds and have tried pretty much every foot and hand warmer possibility!

The best thing I have found (although my problem is mainly toes not feet) are the foot warmers/heat pads you stick to your socks. They are disposable, probably not environmentally friendly and expensive but they do work for me.

Something like this...

I meant to say that I ‘invented’ my cardboard insoles when one day I remembered that back in the 80s I had a partner who played football and I used to stand on cardboard when I watched him play when it was very cold!

IAmAMalenkyBitPoogly · 01/01/2021 10:51

They do hand warmers as well which are good, but with the same caveats. You can get reusable ones but they don't actually seem as good.

(I've lost count of the Mners who have recommend turtle doves wrist warmers for hands, I want to go and put my icy fingers on them unexpectedly like I do to DH Grin)

JaneExotic · 01/01/2021 10:59

I recommend Turtle Dove wrist warmers

A tot of brandy always works for me. Grin

DonLewis · 01/01/2021 14:01

Ah, I wasn't clear enough. The leg warmers help with my cold feet. Must be the same principle as wrist warmers somehow keeping your fingers/hands warm.

2magpies1pigeon · 01/01/2021 14:05

I find that layering helps quite a lot - so wearing 2 pairs of socks. Obviously look for thick, warm ones for the outer layer at least.

coldfeet246 · 01/01/2021 15:42

Thankyou all

DonLewis - I did understand but I wear high spec themals, jog pants, thermal trousers and then saloupettes on top (4 layers) and I dont think leg warmers could fit within those layers and still get my saloupettes over!!

2magpies - I think I have tried every combination of 4.7 tog, 2.3 tog sock, wool socks, thermal socks, ski socks, sheepskin insoles, 2 pairs, 3 pairs etc and it is still not working. Rest of my body is lovely and warm even if I look like michelin man!

Iamamalenky - very tempted but we are really against disposable things but if I cant get rechargeable heated ones this may be a temporarly solution as I have to be outside, much as I dont want to be.

Do cashmere socks help at all?

PurpleDandelions · 01/01/2021 15:52

For people using the disposable ones, you can massively increase their life span by sealing in airtight bag after use. I get 3-4 2 hour cycle rides out of each pair. These trips can be weeks apart if properly sealed. Also I find they often work better on top of my feet as they need to get some air to heat up.

coldfeet246 · 01/01/2021 16:55

Thank you purple of that tip. Can you get something similar to disposable idea but where you can reheat/reuse/microwave or something, obviously at higher cost.

2magpies I didnt find difference with cashmere and have tried different combinations on each foot to see if anything helped

IAmAMalenkyBitPoogly · 01/01/2021 17:42

Yes, also I try and make sure my feet are scalding hot before I have to take them outside, it helps retain the heat better (or at least takes longer for them to freeze!)

IAmAMalenkyBitPoogly · 01/01/2021 17:43

This is a bit low tech Grinand probably obvious Blush but I always warm up my socks on the radiator before I put them on.

FrankGrillosFloof · 01/01/2021 18:51

I’m just being nosy so feel free not to answer but where are you/what are you doing that it’s that cold and you’re outside for so long?

AtleastitsnotMonday · 01/01/2021 20:02

I know you have sheepskin insoles but how about sheepskin lined boots. I have Raynauds and they have made the most difference.

coldfeet246 · 01/01/2021 20:50

Frank - sadly nothing exciting - just children training for up to 2 hours and I have ill health so cant run whilst I wait so just take a gentle stroll whilst they are exercising but it can be early morning or late at night so definitely not the time I would choose to walk for the best weather of the day!! It isnt that cold for other people but I suffer badly with the cold.

Iama - never thought to warm up my feet or the socks first - I could try that.

Atleast - I will look into that - do you have any recommendations. I have insoles made for my boots due to health condition so not sure if they would be transferrable - i have just put sheepskin ones on top of the hospital ones in my existing boots of which I have several pairs the same.

Thank you

Hey @coldfeet246, I’ve been looking into this today too - I don’t cope at all with the cold on my feet due to Raynauds, it’s so painful! Not found any combination of socks & shoes that work so far. I have an amazing heating gilet run with a battery pack and desperately need the same for my feet! Will post if I see anything- interested to see the suggestions!
