Weird feeling of pulse in tummy!

frostymornings · 30/12/2020 11:04

Waiting in a call back from the GP, feel like a right twit explaining this but I've had a weird pulsing sensation in my tummy for the last couple of days, made the mistake of googling it and of course I've come across the possibility of AAA which is abdominal aortic aneurism, one of the symptoms being the sensation of a pulse in your abdomen. Most common in older men apparently but I am a bit worried.
Definitely not pregnant by the way!
Anyone else had this?

Google is not your friend. Nor are medical books.

frostymornings · 30/12/2020 11:10

No I realise that. It was the NHS website in my defenceBlush Just wondered if anyone else had experienced it.

I’ve always had a pulse in my tummy. I can see it when I lie down. I thought this was normal? Is your particularly strong? Hope the Dr can put your mind at ease.

I can see mine move. If it was AAA you'd likely be dead by now op!

missyB1 · 30/12/2020 11:16

Are you slim? Your pulse will be more noticeable if you are (and yes in your tummy too). How old are you? AAA is very rare in young people.

I had this some years ago and as there is a history of aortic aneurysms in my family, three close relatives died within hours of becoming ill, I had it investigated and was sent for a scan which showed I was absolutely fine. I was told to have another scan in ten years time. I still get the pulsing sensation but as I suffer with anxiety I have accepted that it’s probably just that. Best to have it checked though. BTW one of my relatives was my mums sister so it’s not just elderly men.

Oh goodness I'm so sorry you've had these losses in your family. Glad you've been checked out and are OK.

Not slim unfortunately, I am in the overweight category according to BMI calculator.

I'm 46 by the way.

I have this but only noticed it since I’ve had DD as it feels like baby kicks and if I’m laying down I can see it through my clothes 🤪

LetsAllSpeakScience · 30/12/2020 11:30

I've had this for as long as I can remember, it's even more noticeable when I'm pregnant. I'm not slim either.

I asked the ultrasound technicians about it once and they said that it's perfectly fine, not common but not a problem. Some people just have their large blood vessel close to the surface and when you are pregnant it pushes it out even more. You could probably get a phone appointment with your GP to put your mind at ease?

Thank you, yes I am waiting for a call back from the GPSmile

It's so important that you get that checked out. A 'heartbeat' in your tummy could mean an aortic aneurysm, which if it bursts can become fatal. My mum had this last year. They managed to find it and operate (it was a large one) in time but there were complications and part of her bowel died. She is recovering now but spent four months in hospital last year. Please get it checked ASAP.

Thank you for sharing your experience, I hope your mum is OK now, I will definitely get it looked into.

There was almost the same thread the other day, everything was fine I think... hope all is well with you tooFlowers

MustardMitt · 30/12/2020 12:01

I have this, only really noticeable when I’m in the bath.

I’m intrigued by the ‘more noticeable when slim’ as I’m fat and it’s always been more noticeable when fat as my belly wobbles with it Grin

MustardMitt · 30/12/2020 12:02

Oh, and to add, I never even considered it was an issue until I read a similar thread a couple of years ago!

AlwaysLatte · 30/12/2020 12:03

Sorry, that was a bit blunt - it was a very scary experience but would have been easier all round if she'd checked it out when she first got the feeling (and if she hadn't smoked for decades). It may well not be that of course, it's just really advisable to go and get it ruled out. 💐

AlwaysLatte · 30/12/2020 12:09

Google is not your friend. Nor are medical books.
I disagree as I found out about this and persuaded my mum to go to the doctor and my Googling was right. But what you do read should be taken as only a possibility - obviously you shouldn't diagnose yourself and your GP should be your first port of call - it's helpful though to know if certain apparently harmless symptoms should be taken seriously.

WilyKat · 30/12/2020 12:10

I get this but only notice it in the bath. Also not slim. And I've noticed it since I had a c section. Hope all goes well OP

I thought it was normal too 😳

frostymornings · 30/12/2020 14:47

So I have spoken to the GP, he is going to arrange an ultrasound to check all is OK, I do have a lot of scar tissue from abdominal surgery and he wondered if it has made me more sensitive in that area. I have strict instructions to go to A&E if I start to feel unwell or in a lot of pain.
Thanks for all the advice on this thread, very helpful.
