Unsettling drunk behaviour

I'm posting this just to get it off my chest as I find this situation unsettling.

On Christmas Day, early evening, we visited my cousin and her family.

When we arrived she was fairly drunk and being a bit sarcastic towards her DH. They don't have a great relationship and she often puts him down etc.

She started to get a bit aggressive, verbally, to him and after about an hour and a half, we left. Her youngest had started crying, asking her to stop being nasty.

I Whatsapped a thank you to them the following day, and her DH told me that she'd become totally pissed, cycled off to find a garage to buy cigarettes (she hasn't smoked in fifteen years or so), and she ended up waking up in the garden with a fractured jaw and wrist (they have steps in the garden, which were icy). She was freezing in just her thin pyjamas.

She's threatened to leave him and start divorce proceedings.

She refused his offer of a lift to hospital and drove with her broken wrist, which apparently had blown up like a balloon.

Apparently she has a lot if bruising and swelling on her face too.

I haven't heard from her, despite messaging a couple of times. Do you think I should just leave her to it?

Your cousin sounds like she’s having a very difficult time atm
Would you expect her to reply sooner?

Hopdathelf · 30/12/2020 10:49

I think she probably needs your support more than ever.

I think her divorcing him would do him a massive favour. Poor bloke, it sounds a hideous relationship.

Mrsjayy · 30/12/2020 10:56

She might be mortified about her behaviour and furious at her husband for telling you what happened. Let it lie for a day or 2 then try againkeep talking to the DH her drinking affects the whole family the poor daughter.

Soutiner · 30/12/2020 10:57

What is at the root of her drinking to excess and behaving badly and recklessly?

Alcoholism is a disease.

Whilst her behaviour can’t be condoned you can support her if she is willing to address the problems and hasn’t a willingness to stop drinking altogether or to excess.

As with all addicts they have to be willing to help themselves, if they aren’t then all your efforts to help them will be fruitless, time consuming and draining on your emotions.

I read the DC was a daughter not that it matters the poor kid seeing that.

How would you fracture your jaw falling off a bike? Are you sure you're getting the real story here??

JM10 · 30/12/2020 14:41

How would you fracture your jaw falling off a bike?

Surely you could of you hit your face?

midnightstar66 · 30/12/2020 14:44

It sounds like she fell on the icy steps rather than off her bike

enjoyingscience · 30/12/2020 14:47

God, how awful. If she doesn’t usually drink in this way this is probably why, some people just break down/become absolutely unhinged when they get a drink in them. Is it part of a pattern or a totally new thing?

I bet she’s absolutely mortified and feeling pretty low.

hopeishere · 30/12/2020 14:49

Does she normally drink like this? Is she an alcoholic?

I'm sure she's mortified so I would leave it for a while. Maybe suggest a walk if that's feasible.
