Anime for a 9, nearly 10 year old - help please!

My daughter has a interest in all things Japanese. We are from the U.K.

She loves all kawaii things, we visit the oriental supermarkets and she now keeps asking to watch Anime on Netflix.

She’s asking to watch Kakegurui. It’s a 15 and Iv looked it up/watched the trailer and it 100% is not appropriate at all. I only got halfway through the trailer and it was a firm no chance.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a good anime series I can suggest instead for her? She’s watched a few 12s.

I tried a witch one on Netflix and she didn’t like it.

Studio Ghibli films are our favourite.
Has she seen Spirited Away?

Kanaloa · 29/12/2020 23:54

Second spirited away, it’s amazing. Maybe little witch academia. Good idea to check before, I was shocked at rewatching a few episodes of dragonball recently - I didn’t realise how awful it was when I was a kid.

PlanDeRaccordement · 29/12/2020 23:57

I second Studio Ghibli
A few are not age appropriate. But many are:
Spirited Away
Kiki’s Delivery Service
My Neighbour Totoro
Princess Mononoke
Nausica Valley of the Wind
Castle in the Sky
Borrowers aka Arriety
Ponyo
Castle Cagliostro

Have a look at Voltron.

HelplessProcrastinator · 30/12/2020 00:00

Another vote for Studio Ghibli films on Netflix. They are beautiful and have strong female characters. This is where my now 13 year started and she us is anime and manga obsessed.

PlanDeRaccordement · 30/12/2020 00:02

There is also a great Japanese game for that age group: Ni no Kune and Ni no Kune wrath of white witch.

They’re role playing games. In first one the main character goes to another world to rescue his mum and learns to cast magic spells, solve puzzles and fight monsters.

ZeldaPrincessOfHyrule · 30/12/2020 00:12

Another Ghibli vote here.

It's not strictly anime, but there's Avatar, both The Last Airbender and then Legend of Korra, has she seen any of that? It's very much in the style of, and it's fab. Strong female characters, really interesting character arcs. Love it.

CoolCatTaco · 30/12/2020 00:19

My 10 year old loves anime too & she really enjoyed the The Last Airbender. The Netflix show, not the film, it's awful!
She also enjoyed Little Witch Academia and Glitter force.

Charlie63849 · 30/12/2020 09:11

Thanks everyone.

Lots of great suggestions! I will defiantly be suggesting them to her and saying others have recommended them for her.

I don’t believe she’s watched any of them as she always asks me if she can watch things first before playing it.

@Kanaloa I was really shocked at the trailer for Kakegurui. I also watched dragon ball Z as a kid and enjoyed it but haven’t watched it in years.

Little Witch Academia is the one I found and put on for her but she doesn’t seem to like it. I think that’s more to do with the fact Iv told her no to Kakegurui and she was still trying to bargain with me.

@PlanDeRaccordement - that sounds great, she loves role playing games.

Now She just wants me to take her to Japan Grin

There’s so much good anime on Netflix, but not a great deal for 9-10 year olds. Someone else has mentioned Avatar the Last Airbender and it’s sequel Legend of Korra, and while they aren’t technically anime they are a very similar style. They are great stories and most anime fans love them. The Dragon Prince is similar.

If you’re not limited to Netflix, you could try Funimation. There’s a free month trial then £5 a month. They have a kid safe list: www.funimation.com/discover/kid-safe-anime/
I recommend My Hero Academia.

I mean there’s always Pokémon, but I assume she’s aware of that!

CoolCatTaco · 30/12/2020 09:36

Mine also wants to go to Japan & learn Japanese!

PlanDeRaccordement · 30/12/2020 10:33

Oh yes Avatar last air bender anime series was a firm favourite here too.
Also agree the live action film was awful.

Mine is learning on Duolingo, he loves it!

I’m not limited to Netflix Smile I also have Disney +, amazon prime, now tv and a full sky package :)

I will also look into funimation and do the free trial for her. If she watches it then il keep it Smile

Yeh, she’s not keen on Pokemon for some reason. I also loved it as a kid!

Same! I always said if I could afford it I was going to take her to New York for her 16th but that may be Japan now Grin if I don’t take her before, my brother also wants to go to Japan also though so may see about the 3 of us going.

@ZeldaPrincessOfHyrule - is duolingo easy? My daughter has dyslexia and was a really late fluent reader! Actually one if the things that helped her a lot was a anime series on Netflix and the little figures had speech bubbles and they chatted to each other. That helped her more then any book/teacher or I could as she found something she wanted to read (don’t worry about the 50 off books I bought in the cupboardGrin)

Be really careful. There is a lot of stuff out there which is very sexual and its a rabbit hole I wish DS1 had never gone down.

It was the sexual stuff I noticed in the trailer for the one she wanted to watch. She’s desperate to watch anime though and I don’t think il be able to curb the obsession as it’s been creeping up for a year so I thought I’d try and get some advice on age appropriate anime. :)

CoolCatTaco · 30/12/2020 12:50

I worry about that too! My DD loves the whole Gacha thing but some of the videos had sexual & self harming references so she's heavily monitored. I'm going to watch My Hero Academia with her later, hopefully it will be appropriate.

TheChippendenSpook · 30/12/2020 12:58

I'd recommend Love Live. It's about some school children who want to save their school from closing and form a singing group.

TheChippendenSpook · 30/12/2020 13:00

The first series is Love Live! School idol project.

TheChippendenSpook · 30/12/2020 13:02

Also Haikyu is good. It's about a school Volleyball team. Sounds boring but I watch it with my son and really enjoy it. My nine year old enjoys it too as it has funny parts.

InkieNecro · 30/12/2020 13:04

Grimoire of Zero? No sex, but I think one scene where a shop owner insists he wants Zero's old clothes as payment for her new clothes.

We’ve just downloaded this for the Switch thanks to your recommendation! Thanks Smile it looks beautiful.
PlanDeRaccordement · 30/12/2020 19:26

@QueenArseClangers
So happy to hear you like the game. The art of the world is gorgeous. I got it for my DD when she was 11. She is 16 now. But she absolutely adored the game.

I totally forgot, but yes Haikyuu is great. Being a sports anime, there’s absolutely nothing not kid friendly about it. I thought I’d find it boring as I have no interest in volleyball otherwise, but it was actually really exciting getting behind a fictional team.

Someone else mentioned My Hero Academia and whether it’s appropriate. It does have fighting and scaryish bad guys, but I’d say it’s no different to the level of threat and violence you’d see in western kids cartoons. I’ve recommended it to a 10 year old relative as I think it’s okay for that age group.
